  1. HEALTH SCREENING Health screening is the standard required by the Department of Health for new Healthcare Workers This includes students who have clinical placements Health screening covers: -Health questionnaire - Fitness to practice - Immunisation

  2. WHAT IS HEALTH SCREENING? Health screening is concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of students who have clinical placements. (Health questionnaire) Health screening looks at the effect of your clinical practice on your health. (Fitness to Practice) Health screening provides protection for you and your clients (Immunisations)

  3. HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE You will be asked to complete and submitted a health questionnaire prior to enrolment. Please ensure we have your current email address. If you haven’t received your health questionnaire 4 weeks to commencing your programme, Email: health@derby.ac.ukconfirming your name and email address and one will be sent out to you. Please check your spam box as well as your inbox

  4. COMPLETING THE HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE Remember you have a professional responsibility to be totally honest and give full details of previous medical, physical or mental health issues If you have any concerns or problems with completing the questionnaire please contact the University Nurses on Tel: 01332 591317

  5. FITNESS TO PRACTICE All health questionnaires are assessed and recorded as - fit for practice or - require additional information If ‘additional information’ is required an appointment will be arranged for you with the medical officer where you will be given the opportunity to discuss what ‘additional information’ is required. This will take place at your initial screen where most students are declared as Fit for Practice.

  6. CONFIDENTIALITY All health screening information is kept confidential and restricted to the Health Team that means: Your tutors will not be informed without your consent Placements will not be informed without your consent. Although we would encourage you to let them know now, particularly if you are likely to need any support We will inform programme leaders when a student is unfit for practice and when students have not completed the required vaccinations for the placement.

  7. IMMUNISATIONS The Department of Health requires students to be vaccinated and screened prior to their clinical placement for: Hepatitis B (primary course + post immunisation blood test ) MMR (Mumps, Measles Rubella) Varicella(Chickenpox) TB screening Hepatitis C and HIV (risk assessed from questionnaire)

  8. WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU Provide evidence of previous vaccinations from your GP, Occupational Health Department, school clinic Ask your GP receptionist for a computer print out of any - Vaccinations for Hepatitis B, MMR and BCG - Blood tests for Hepatitis B If you previously worked for the NHS contact the Occupational Health Department and ask for a print out of your vaccinations and blood tests Keep us informed of any changes to your health and attend all the health screening session

  9. TB SCREENING PROVIDED AT SCHOOL To complete your TB screening we require one of the following forms of evidence -written evidence and the date of BCG vaccination - visible BCG scar (normally found on upper left arm over deltoid muscle) - evidence of immunity of a positive Mantoux skin test taken within the last 5 years

HEALTH SCREENING SESSIONS Programme leaders will inform you of your allocated appointment times and location prior to each session Students are required to attend all mandatory health screening sessions. If you do not attend this may impact on your clinical placement. Programme leaders are informed if you do not attend the sessions.

  11. FIRST HEALTH SCREENING SESSION Unless we have received written evidence of your vaccinations (provided by medical staff) we will have to start your vaccination programme by giving you the following - Hep B 1 in Rt arm - MMR 1 in Lt arm - TB skin test in lower Lt arm - Blood test to check for Varicella There is also an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have.
