Session 1: Introduction to the course • By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • State their personal goals • List the course objectives • State the course programme • Explain where the course fits into cycle training schemes • State the purpose of the Bikeability Scotland Trainers Guide, Prompt Cards and Cyclist Guide. • Refer to Cyclecraft by JohnFranklin for useful reference material.
Session 2: Bikeability Scotland Level 1 Sessions By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Recall the Level 1 Sessions in outline • Describe to resources required to run Level 1 Sessions • Recognise the complementary activities contained within the Cyclist’s Guide.
Session 3: Model Sessions By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Prepare a session plan • Risk assess the outdoor training location • Prepare and co-deliver a session • Review a session • Evaluate a session.
Session 4: Summary & Review-Bikeability Scotland Level 1 By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Recall the Level 1programme in outline • Review key learning points • Ask questions about the programme.
Session 5: Introduction to Bikeability Scotland Level 2 By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Describe the course outcomes • Relate the course resources to the course content • Identify further reading within the resources.
Session 6: Core Manoeuvres in theory & practice By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Describe and demonstrate appropriate road positioning • List the core manoeuvres required at Level 2 of the National Standard • Describe the “ EDICT” and “Experiential” teaching tools • Discuss group management in an on-road teaching context • Describe the difference between positioning as required by SCTS* and that required by the National Standard.
Session 7: Safety Accessories & Clothing By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Discuss helmet fitting; pros and cons of helmet usage • Discuss wearing appropriate clothing for conspicuity • Consider impact on driver behaviour of training course participants wearing high visibility clothing.
Session 8: The Highway Code By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Identify and interpret a range of traffic signs • Discuss child focussed aspects of the Highway Code • Identify personal development issues.
Session 9: The Competent Trainer By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Recognise the range of skills, behaviours • and qualities possessed by a competent trainer • Identify areas for personal development.
Session 10: Session preparation By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Discuss session delivery with colleagues • Decide how to deliver session to enable everyone to participate • Make minor changes to the provided exemplar session (if required).
Session 10bPreparation for Day 2 By the end of this session clients will have: • Selected an advanced manoeuvre topic • Given consideration to the requirements to present the information creatively to colleagues.
Session 11Review By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Review the day • Recall the outline programme for the next day.
Session 12: Session Delivery By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Practice delivery of an on-road training session • Review the training session • Reflect on the experience.
Session 13: Bikeability Scotland Level 2 By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Recall the details of the scheme in outline • Recognise the additional training required before they can deliver the programme.
Session 14: More complex junctions & riding strategy By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Negotiate more complex junctions • Explain the decisions made whilst negotiating hazards • Demonstrate a correct and consistent riding strategy.
Session 15: Summary & Review By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Recall the Level 1 Course in outline • Review key learning points • Ask questions about the programme.
Session 16: Introduction to Bikeability Scotland Level 3 By the end of this session trainers will be able to: • Describe the course outcomes • Relate the course resources to the course content • Identify further reading within the resources.
Session 17:Advanced Manoeuvres, Mini Lectures By the end of this session clients will have: • Delivered a mini lecture on an advanced manoeuvre topic. • Answered questions from colleagues.
Session 18:Advanced Manoeuvres, Practical By the end of this session clients will be able to: • Apply the theory from Session 23 in practice • Apply consistent strategy to the negotiation of complex road hazards • Recognise when it may be safer to walk • Demonstrate an awareness of surrounding traffic and other hazards.
Session 19: Practical Instruction By the end of this session clients will have practiced: • Instructing a trainee utilising the three instructional riding positions • Assessing a trainee at Level 3.
Session 27: Next steps/ Course review By the end of this session clients will be able to: • State the next steps in their pathway • State appropriate useful cycling links • Review the whole course.
