  9. Accountability Workshops (PM) After the 1 hour break for lunch we will offer more interactive presentations on some or all of the topics listed here. We will present these as time permits in the order of expressed interest when you registered for this tour event and surveys returned to us before lunch. Feel free to make requests; we’re here to help YOU!

What’s New or Up and Coming? • Michigan’s ESEA Flexibility Application was APPROVED by USED! • Michigan’s Approved ESEA Flexibility Requestwww.mi.gov/eseaflex • Label/name change from “PLA Schools” to “Priority Schools” • Identification of “Focus Schools” • NEW “Accountability Scorecards” (Summer 2013) • AYP as we know it is “gone.” • Educator Evaluations • Reporting of NEW Educator Effectiveness labels in REP • Principal Training Grants • NEW BAA Secure Site (Summer 2013) • Currently developing and reviewing ranking options for “small schools.”

What has Stayed the Same? • Top-to-Bottom Ranking methodology. • Most of the pieces and parts of AYP have not changed. • Accreditation system status: • Still have EdYES! in Michigan law • Michigan School Accreditation (MSA) still in legislative sub-committee • EdYES! has been asked to be removed from law as supported by the State Board of Education

Challenges in this Work • We are still in a time of rapid change and new initiatives. • The stakes are increasing for Michigan’s educational institutions and educators as well. • The need to provide fair metrics for accountability to capture school performance accurately and still maintain transparency. • Aligning your work and our work with new and existing initiatives from USED, legislature, MDE, etc.

Assessment Updates • Smarter Balanced (2014-15) • Replaces MEAP-Access, MEAP and MME • Reading, writing, and mathematics (Continue MEAP for Sci. and S.S.) • Dynamic Learning Maps (2014-15) • Replaces MI-Access • Reading, writing, and mathematics (Continue MI-Access for Sci. & NEW MI-Access S.S. assessment) • WIDA • Will likely replace ELPA next year • Includes an alternate assessment option

Online Assessment Updates • 2014-15, moving all assessments online and to the spring season • Smarter Balanced • Dynamic Learning Maps • WIDA/ELPA • Testing window will be lengthened to address technology and staffing concerns • Smarter Balanced recently released sample items and performance tasks– be sure to check them out! • Available for ELA and math to help prepare for next-gen assessments • http://www.smarterbalanced.org/news/smarter-balanced-releases-sample-assessment-items-and-performance-tasks/
