  1. Effect of Phosphorus Placement, Phosphorus Rate, Seeding Rate and Row Spacing on Canola Paul Hendrickson NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center

  2. Justification • Direct Seeding • One Pass Operation • Maximum N Rates in Seed Row 6-inch row = 10 lb 12-inch row = 5 lb • Mid-row Banding fertilizer • 14-inch Rows • Immobile Nutrient Uptake

  3. Effect of Row Spacing and Seeding Rate on Canola

  4. Materials and Methods Two Hybrids • Invigor 4870 (2005, 2006) or Invigor 5550 (2008) - larger plant type • Hyola 357 Magnum - smaller plant type • Row Spacing • 7 inches • 14 inches • Seeding Rate • 7 live seeds / square foot • 14 live seeds / square foot

  10. Effect of Phosphorus Placement and Rate on Canola

  11. Materials and Methods • Invigor 4870 planted in 14 inch rows • 8 live seeds / square foot • Two Sites (2005 and 2006) • Q, Landon E

  12. Phophorus ppm (Olsen) Phophorus Recommendation

  13. Materials and Methods • Phosphorus Rate • 2005: 0, 11.25, 22.5, and 45 lb P2O5/acre • 2006 0, 22.5, 45, and 90 lb P2O5/acre • Phosphorus Placement • In-row, Mid-row band, Every-row, and Broadcast • Phosphorus Source • 11-52-0

  24. 2008Effect of Phosphorus Placement on Canola • Objective; • Evaluate the effectiveness of mid-row banding phosphorus fertilizer. • Collect plant tissue samples to determine when and how efficiently the plants utilize the phosphorus.

  25. Materials and Methods • Invigor 5550 • 14 pure live seeds/ft2 • 4 Sites • Langdon • Carrington – Low, Medium, Irrigated

  30. 2008 Seed Yield

  31. Summary • Seeding Rate • 13% increase in seed yield as the seeding rate increased from 7 to 14 live seeds/ft2 • Row Spacing • Smaller plant type (Hyola 357 Magnum) • Decreased yield as row spacing increased • 2 out of the 3 years • Larger plant type (Invigor 4870) • Yields were similar with 7 and 14 inch rows

  32. Summary • Phosphorus Rate • Recommendations accurate • Phosphorus Placement • Minimal impact on yield • Injury with in-row application as rate increased • Reduction in plant growth with mid-row band application when the soil P levels were low
