  3. The submarine. • The submarine is a very important tool in warfare. Even the ancient cultures tried to travel under water. Experts say that Alexander The Great used people in glass bottles to destroy enemy sub defenses. The submarine helps man explore the depths of the ocean. From the wooden ships of old to the nuclear powered modern vessels. Submarines are used for homeland defense and for under sea patrolling.

  4. The inventor • The submarine as we know it was invented by John P. Holland. But, the submarine’s origin comes from way back. People say that in the time of Alexander the great people used a form of sub marine. The first recorded design came from a man named William Borne. But, he never got past the drawing stage. A man named Cornelis Drebble made the first built submarine. He was a Dutchman that constructed the first useable sub.

  5. When it was invented • Plans for the submarine began in 1578. William Bourn drew the first submarine design. The sub never made it; the idea never got past the drawing board. His submarine was based on ballast tanks, which are still used today. In 1620 Cornelis Drebbel was the first to address the air problem in the sub. Another ancient sub was built in 1776. David Bushnell invented a man-powered submersible. It was called the Turtle. Revolutionists tried to use it to destroy British ships. The Turtle had positive buoyancy. Up to 6 inches of its hull floated on top of the water. Every advance in the submarine could be counted as a new invention, but the true inventor lived hundreds of years ago.

  6. How it has changed our lives • The submarine has changed our lives tremendously. We are able to reach the depths to do research on our world or previous accidents. Looking at previous wreckage can prevent future accidents. This form of research is crucial to nautical travel. We are able to research the dark depths of the ocean in search of answers because of these mechanical fish. Submarines also help protect countries. Subs patrol the seas in order to find and destroy enemies. Subs are a crucial part of our sea activities.
