Math Standards • The Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) were passed by the Florida Legislature in 2007 • They are revisited every 10 yrs. • All grades (K-12) are now in full implementation • Based on the NCTM Focal Points • The FCAT will reflect these changes this school year • Standards available upon request. • They are also available on my website or at the following link: • www.floridastandards.org

  8. 3rd Grade Big Ideas • Develop understandings of multiplication and division and strategies for basic multiplication facts and related division facts • Develop an understanding of fractions and fraction equivalence • Describe and analyze properties of two-dimensional shapes

  9. 5th Grade Big Ideas • Develop an understanding of and fluency with division of whole numbers • Develop an understanding of and fluency with addition and subtraction of decimals • Describe 3 dimensional shapes and analyze their properties, including volume and surface area.

  10. As standards change, our approach responds… • AGP students must be exposed to on level standards to minimize gaps in understanding • Curriculum will be compacted to allow for the students to experience even greater depth and rigor once concept mastery is determined…

Breaking News! • FishHawk Creek Elementary has been allocated another “1/2 unit” of Gifted! • We will be sharing an experienced teacher of gifted with Pinecrest Elementary • She will be here in the afternoons to help us meet the needs of our 5th grade students • A plan of action will be developed to best meet those needs • More information to follow

More Breaking News! • My classroom is being converted into a High Stakes Testing Room • In November, 23 high tech computer stations will be installed in the classroom • We will be displaced for 2 weeks for renovation and during FAIR testing (1 week in Jan. or Feb. ) • Each student will have access to a computer at his/her desk!

  19. Grades • Three Major Categories • Test Avg. (40%) • Projects / Class work (40%) • Includes graded class work assignments, warm-ups, journal entries, long- term assignments, etc. • Quizzes (20%) • 80% Rule • Homework completion is considered behavioral. It is not graded for accuracy.

  20. Science Calendar Timeline • 1st Quarter: Physical Science • 2nd Quarter: Earth/Space Science • 3rd Quarter: Life Science • 4th Quarter: Project Based Learning

Science Expectations • Students will be taught at the current grade level standards in order to establish a strong foundation in science, as we are implementing new standards. • 5th grade will be taking the Science portion of the FCAT this year. • Last year’s FHC science scores were some of the highest in the county and the state! • 86% of our students are scoring at a Level 3 or higher, so we still have a long way to go! • Science Expectations available upon request!
