You shall not murder 6. You shall not commit adultery. 7. You shall not steal. 8. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor 9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

  7. The Purpose of the Old Covenant • It is summarized by the 10 Commandments • Purpose of the Law – to Show Our Sin (SOS) • Curb – Teaches what sin is – 1 Timothy 1:9-11 • Mirror – We see our own sin – Romans 3:20 • Rule – How we should live – Gal. 3:10 and 1 John 1:8 – We can’t keep the law, only one has • It shows our need for a Savior • The sacrifices reminded them of their sins

  8. The Purpose of the Old Covenant • The problem - we can’t keep the Law perfectly and those sacrifices aren’t enough • Hebrews 10:1-4 • If a bull or goat could truly take away sins once and for all, it wouldn’t have been repetitive

  9. The Promise of a New Covenant to Come • Israel continues to sin – much like we do • They eventually end up in exile and a hope for a New Covenant is heard through the prophets • Jeremiah 31:31-34 • Write it on their hearts • Forgive • Will remember their sins no more • Even in their sin, God offered hope – so today, God offers to hope to all

  10. The Purpose of the New Covenant • Fulfillment of the Law – Matthew 5:17 • Purpose of the Gospel – to Show Our Savior (SOS) • The “Good News” of the forgiveness of sins – John 3:16

  11. Preeminence of the New Covenant • New Covenant based on the promises listed in Jeremiah 31 • Sin is forgiven – God doesn’t remember it any more • We have confidence because of our faith • Romans 3:28

  12. Applications and Implications • Because of Christ’s sacrifice, I have confidence that I’m forgiven • Because of Christ’s sacrifice, I can boldly approach God • Though I remain sinful, I know the Holy Spirit guides me to follow His Word • My sins have been imputed onto Christ and therefore I have been made righteousness
