History of the race • The exact origin of Orcs in LOTR is not exact • Tolkien tried many different ideas but they eventually died • Some ideas were published in the Silmarillion
History of the race • Evil, in LOTR, are not capable of independent creation • Mogorth was the first to create them, and was able to do so from nothing • Females are ever mentioned but are implied
History of the race • The first tale involved with Orcs is found in The Fall of Gondolin, and were made by Morgoth (circa 1917) • In the Silmarillion, Orcs are suggested descended from East Elves captured by Melkor, their minds and bodies distorted and corrupted.
History of the race • The corrupted origin can be seen in the Peter Jackson films of LOTR where Sarumansays “Do you know how the Orcs first came into being? They were elves once, taken by the dark powers, tortured and mutilated. A ruined and terrible form of life..." • There is also another theory that Orcs originally twisted humans
History of the race • First age: Bred as core force for Morgoth, Out numbered most armies but usually easily defeated by superior skill, although no power was great enough to beat the dark lord • Second age: Ring of power is created, despite its insane amout of power Sauron continues to use Orcs as his main force being that they were expandable • Third age: Now under Sauron and the Witch king of Angmar, despite out numbering other armies, more battles took place but the Orcs lost (War of the ring) • Fourth and beyond: Orcs continue to dwell posing no threat
Differences of the Orcs • Uruks of Isenguard were more impatient in the movies and only used ladders • Uruk-Hai are younger, stronger, and more reckless in battle
Differences of the Orcs • Orcs of Mordor took the time to build rams, siege towers, and trebuchets • Orcs of Mordor are older, not quite as strong, but more organized in combat situations
Orc weapons • The Falchions: Uruk-hai used them • Combined weight and power of an axe with the versatility of a sword
Orc weapons • Crossbows also used by Orcs • Certain Orcs carried a crossbow and bolts • Crank back to load bolts and fire • Used to pick of distant enemies
Orc weapons • The sappers operated the siege engines • Ballistas (giant crossbows)used to breach walls, unique to Orcs • Trebuchets, used to destroy walls and thin enemy lines • Catapult used primarily to weaken walls
