  1. ASSESSMENT TWO: (Units 1 & 4) Presentation & assignment on a research topic of your choosing. Part A: Literature search: finding an article on a quantitative scientific experiment. Source a research article describing a scientific experiment that has relevance to massage therapy or shiatsu. The article must be from a scientific journal, preferably one that is peer-reviewed.

  2. What is peer review? • Peer review is the process where manuscripts submitted to a journal are assessed and evaluated for their quality, value and credibility. • Journal editors select subject experts to review and evaluate submitted manuscripts before accepting (or rejecting) them for publication. • Authors are required to respond to feedback provided by peer reviewers and manuscripts must pass the peer review process in order to be published. EVALUATING INFORMATION • Author and publisher • Who is the author/creator or publisher? • What is their authority? • What is their bias and purpose in writing or presenting this information? • Is the content based on opinion or fact? • Is it a balanced treatment of the topic? • Coverage or scope • Is it appropriate for my purpose? • Is the information at the appropriate level and depth? • Have I found various sides of the story? • e.g. for and against in a controversial issue, or some statistics as well as a personal account, or information from a government department as well as from an Advocacy group. • Currency • How recent is the information? • Is the date of the information important to your topic? • Accuracy: • Can the information be verified from other sources? • Is there a bibliography or reference list?

Source a research article describing a scientific experiment that has relevance to massage therapy or shiatsu. The article must be from a scientific journal, preferably one that is peer-reviewed. The article can be on one of the following topics: Stretching Cancer Athletic performance Immunity Pregnancy Scoliosis Migraines/headaches Injuries Geriatric Care Peripheral vascular disease Manipulation/chiropractic adjustments Arthritis Multiple Sclerosis Stroke Cerebral Palsy Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Asthma Insomnia Mental Health Fermented foods Yoga Women’s Health Issues Pain Shiatsu students – the shiatsu options also include meditation and fermented foods.

  5. Title of Study: Page numbers: Vol: Year of Publication Date research was conducted You must state how you found the article. i.e. what internet searches you performed, and provide a paper copy or a web link (URL) for the article. Attach a copy of the article.

  6. PART B: ANALYSIS OF THE RESEARCH. Give a brief summary in your own words of the experiment and findings List the author/s and their qualifications. Write the abbreviation of their quals plus exactly what they stand for (e.g. BA = Bachelor of Arts) State where the research was carried out (the country, the institution .e.g. a uni etc. State how many subjects were used State the independent variable State the dependent variable State how the control group differed from the experimental group. If no control group, state how each group differed. What parameters were measured (e.g. heart rate, pain scales, cortisol levels etc.)

Variables - There are 3 categories of variables in every experiment. • Dependent -- is what will be measured; it's what the investigator thinks will be affected during the experiment. • e.g., the investigator may want to study coffee bean growth. Possible dependent variables include: number of beans, weight of the plant, leaf surface area, time to maturation, height of stem. • Independent -- is what is varied during the experiment; it is what the investigator thinks will affect the dependent variable. • In the coffee bean example, possible independent variables include: amount of fertilizer, type of fertilizer, temperature, amount of H2O, day length, all of these may affect the number of beans, weight of the plant, leaf area, etc. • NOTE: Since you need to know which factor is affecting the dependent variable(s), there may be only one independent variable. The investigator must choose the one that he/she thinks is most important. But the scientist can measure as many dependent variables as he/she thinks are important indicators of coffee bean growth. • Controlled -- the variables held constant. Since the investigator wants to study the effect of one particular independent variable, the possibility that other factors are affecting the outcome must be eliminated. • For example, the above scientist must ascertain that no differences in the type of fertilizer used exists, or amount of H2O, variations of temperature, or day length exist. Part C: Literature Review: • On the same topic as above or a more general one on massage or shiatsu, find an article that examines a series of research papers on this topic.Attach a copy of the article. Or if too long send Marguerite a link to marguerite.rummery@tafensw.edu.au. • How can massage or shiatsu or meditation or pickled foods be found to assist this condition? What kind of qualitative and quantitative evidence has been found? • What are the qualifications of the author? From what kinds of sources did she base her research? Is it a credible piece of writing? Where was it published? • Find one abstract of a scientific experiment relating to this topic.

  9. Part D: Tools of research: • Imagine you are going to do your own small research project on how massage or shiatsu can assist a client with one of the conditions you’ve chosen. Or you might like to limit it to specific techniques for a particular condition. • What kind of methodology will you use to evaluate whether or not massage can assist with the condition? How long will you conduct the experiment for? • Design a questionnaire. • Where relevant include a list of objective measurements you could use. • What tools are already out there that you could use? (e.g. pain questionnaires.) • How would you establish a control group?

Part E: Presentation: (include a brief discussion on your future study options) • Present your findings to the group in a 20 minute presentation in the format of a simulated talk to a group of massage or shiatsu therapists. Your presentation should include at least one of the following visual aids: • Handout • Poster • O/H • Graphs, charts or any other relevant support material • Please reference assignment appropriately
