  5. Pay attention to your surroundings.

  6. Lock your room. Don’t leave valuables out when you’re away.

  7. Keep up with your belongings.

  8. Especially your PASSPORT

  9. Your Passport • Make a two copies of the identification page of your passport (the one with your picture and passport number.)

  10. Leave one copy at home, and tell a parent or friend where to find it. • Give the second copy to your faculty leader.

  11. Use the “buddy system.”

  12. Avoid wearing conspicuous clothing and expensive jewelry.

  13. Dress appropriately for the occasion

  14. Comfortable shoes are essential.

  15. Be prepared. • Know the name of address of your hotel/dorm in case you become separated from your group. • Know your itinerary. • In the big city, carry enough money for a taxi.

  17. Phone Home • International Calling Card • Some cell phones have international roaming. Check with your company.

  18. Text/Email Check with your provider to see if you have international data usage and know the rates! They can be expensive

  20. Baggage • Baggage allowance is very strict.

  21. Checked Bags • Check your airline for the most current details. Rules change frequently.

  30. Medication • If you are on medication, do not pack your medicine in your checked bag. • Always carry your medicine in its prescription bottle.

  31. Money Issues - ATMS • Debit cards work best. ATM machines are available in most big cities. Tell your bank that you’ll be out of the country.

  32. Credit Cards • If you take a credit card, record the account number and contact phone number, and leave the information at home with someone you trust.

  33. You’ll have to find a BANK to exchange American dollars or cash Travelers’ Checks.

  34. Never keep all of your important documents and money in one place or suitcase.

  35. Be on Time • International travel requires that you check in two hours before your flight departs.

  36. Alcohol issues

  37. Don’t be tempted. Public drunkenness is frowned upon wherever you are. Excessive consumption of alcohol has been identified as the single greatest risk fact for study abroad participants.

  38. Be aware of what you are drinking and how much you are drinking. Never leave your drink unattended

  39. Stranger Danger Do not go off alone with someone you’ve just met.

  40. Don't leave friends alone if you’re out on your own. Have a plan and stick with it.

  41. Note the time change. Quebec is one hour ahead of Texas.
