Case Study 1: ASD, T/G S IQ, Depression, Anxiety Y6 – Y12 • Transition into Y7 – good from Catholic PS • Y7 & Y8 Extension • Y9 diagnosis Depression & Anxiety • Change, adjust learning program quicker • Alternate program, library, no groups, PD staff • CP IEP meetings with staff Y10 – Y12 • Distance Education - failure • Exit Y12 before graduation
Case Study 2: Anxiety, Dysthymia Disorder F34.1, Talk of Suicide Y4 – Y11 • Transition to Y4, PD to staff well in advance • Extended transition to Y7, adjusted class work, homework, assignments, exams • Extra periods – organisation, catch up all work, study practice* • IEP with CP recommendations told to all staff – a friend VIP • Adjusted subjects planned well in advance Y10 – Y12 • Email constant communication family, CP, School Psych, teachers • Plan with student now and comes to IEPs
Case Study 3: Y7 – Y12 Anxiety and Depression • Difficult transition from Govt. PS – reports, diagnosis N/A • CAMHS letter of concern, country, access to professionals difficult • Isolated quickly, violence, refuse class work • Parent meetings, planning late, some truancy, all staff PD • Support provided, timetable, adjusted all work, H/W, assignments • Rewards, trial in small group – friends established at school/limited • Hearing voices, canteen – poison, peers • Careful work placements with LAC, difficult to change • Camps, Y12 Ball lots of prior planning – success!!
Case Study 4: Severe Depression, Talk Suicide Y5 – Y12 • PS not a MH identified Catholic PS to SS as B/L • Struggled with class work, H/W, exams, isolated • IEP in Y8 told about talk of suicide • Letter of Concern to CAMHS Y9 • CP CAMHS urgent meetings at SS • Adjusted work, catch up periods, small groups, • Outside social group, limited friends at school • Photo sessions 1st period – school camera - motivated to get up • Graduated school Y12 Certificate and attended Ball

WHAT CAN YOU DO? • As an individual: • Be familiar with the symptoms of mental health conditions • As a loved one: • Offer to support an individual’s self-advocacy • As a community: • Be familiar with the resources in your community
TIPS FROM STUDENTS who have a mental health condition • Don’t ignore a student who is depressed or has mental health conditions. • Let them know you care; help them to update missing assignments; set up extra study time. • Be aware of changes in medication as well as behaviours. • Understand that they may not accept your help given the severity of their illness.
