Reflective Writing Workshop Dr Andrew Boyd 2011
Thoughts on Reflective Practice • Do you reflect on your clinical practice? Why? How? Verbal? Written? With who? • What are your thoughts/feelings on writing reflectively? • In what settings do you reflect? • What are the good & bad things about reflective writing? • What are your barriers to it? Do you do it well? What resources do you use? • Have you ever been taught how to?
Why reflect? • Humans are story tellers • Improves self awareness • Exploring strengths and weaknesses • A means of therapy! • Because we have to…
Why is it so important for GPs? • Solitary • Not ‘just’ medicine • Often no ‘right’ answer • Part of training/ongoing assessment
What can we reflect on? • Almost anything! • Decision making processes • Relations with colleagues • Skills & knowledge • Painful/difficult episodes
What reflection isn’t • The ‘only’ path • The route to the ‘correct answer’ • An unnecessary navel gazing exercise • An exercise in self flagellation • Always factually correct • For ‘gifted’ writers only!
Why write? • A concrete footprint on the page • Writing can be redrafted and revisited • Writing can be private • Writing allows for greater ‘depth’ • Allows you to express that which is most personal
How do I do it? • Unstructured • Eportfolio format • ‘Therapeutic’ approach • Mix it up!
