  1. Baptism: Unwatered-down Lesson 2: A Study of Matthew 28:18-20

  2. Baptism: Unwatered-downWhat are we talking about? • By Definition—Immersion in Water • An Important Bible Subject • The “One Baptism” (Eph. 4:5) • A Serious Study! • Water baptism of the Great Commission is tied in some way to salvation. That’s undeniable! • WHAT IS IT’S PURPOSE? • What does it have to do (if anything) with my salvation?

  3. Baptism: Unwatered-downBaptism of the Great Commission • Universal—for all mankind (Mt. 28:19; Mk. 16:15) • Command to be obeyed (Mt. 28:19; Ac. 10:48) • Administered by man (Mt. 28:19; Ac. 8:38) • Administered in water (Ac. 8:36-39; 10:47; 1Pt. 3) • To continue to end of world (Mt. 28:20) • Done “in the name of (by the authority) of Jesus” (Ac. 2:38; 8:16; 10:48; 19:5; 1 Cor. 1:13) • Preceded by faith in Jesus (Mk. 16:16) • Preceded by repentance (Ac. 2:38) • Preceded by confession of faith (Ac. 8:37)

  6. Baptism: Unwatered-downMatthew 28:18-20 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

  7. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples… Christ has all authority/ power to command—all will face Him in judgment The basis for the Great Commission is the authority of Christ (seen in verses 19-20) The main verb of the Great Commission (not “teach”) is an imperative

  8. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 2819 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things… baptizing • It is singled out/given a unique place. • Commonly believed it is just one of the “good works” of a Christian’s life (even the first) • Commonly asserted it is just an “act of obedience” like to other commands from God • Yet, it is distinguished from “all things” • It is singled out similarly in Ephesians 4:5. • It is an integral part of teaching “Jesus” (Ac. 8)

  9. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 2819 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things… MAIN VERB make disciples baptizING 2. It is used as a present participle. • “the manner in which the given action was performed” (Samuel G. Green—Gk Grammar) • “action which takes place at the same time as the action denoted by the leading verb” (Machen—NT Greek for Beginners) • “indicates action which is contemporaneous with the action of the main verb” (Ray Summers—Essentials of NT Greek)

  10. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 2819 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things… MAIN VERB make disciples baptizING • It is essential in becoming a Christian • The present participle declares the manner in which one is made a disciple. • The word “disciple” was often used in a technical sense to refer to more than just a “learner” but an “adherent” (Vine). • “Disciples were…called Christians” (Ac. 11:26) • In whatever manner one became a disciple he also became a Christian (“baptizing them”).

  11. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 2819 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things… make disciples baptizing 4. It is humanly administered. • The disciples were commissioned, as they went forth, to make disciples, immersing them. • The baptism under discussion is one that can and is administered by man (i.e., in water), thus not Holy Spirit baptism, which was only administered by Christ (Mt. 3:11; Jn. 1:33).

  12. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 2819 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things… make disciples baptizing 4. It is humanly administered. • Since this baptism is administered by a second party, it cannot be self-imposed, as is and can be the case with sprinkling or pouring. In N.T. baptism, the candidate is passive (Rom. 6:4). • Since the baptism commanded in this passage was to continue “to the end of the age” (v.20), obviously the “one baptism” of Eph. 4:5 is water immersion (HS bapt. already obsolete).

  13. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 2819 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things… into the name baptizing 5. It is “into the name of F, S, HS.” • “Into (Gk. eis) the name” has a different meaning than “in (Gk. en) the name” of Jesus Christ (cf. Acts 10:48; 19:5). Carries more meaning than simply “by His authority.” • It actually indicates a change of relationship—going from OUTSIDE to INSIDE a union, fellowship or relationship with F, S, HS.

  14. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 2819 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things… into the name baptizing 5. It is “into the name of F, S, HS.” • “Those who are baptized become the possession of and come under the dedicated protection of the one whose name they bear” (BDAG, Greek-English Lexicon). • “Into the name” was a technical term used in the world of Greek commerce to indicate the entry into the account bearing one’s name—indicating an ownership relationship (TDOT).

  15. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 2819 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things… into the name baptizing 5. It is “into the name of F, S, HS.” • We enter a special relationship with God and become His own special possession when bapt. • Hence, one is not in union or fellowship with God (i.e., a Christian) until he submits to baptism. • One is not possessed by God until he submits to baptism. • One cannot refer to God as his Father until he is baptized “into the name of the Father…”

  16. Notice the place of baptism in Mt. 28 • It is singled out/given a unique place. • It is used as a present participle. • It is essential in becoming a Christian. • It is humanly administered. • It is “into the name of F, S, HS.” Baptism is essential to becoming a Christian & being in a new relationship with God!
