  2. What do cabinet members do? Each cabinet member is the leader of a federal department. After you read, on a blank sheet of paper: 1) Summarize the cabinet member’s job in a word or two. • “The U.S. really needs to have this department in order to function.” In 2 to 4 sentences explain WHY you agree or disagree with this sentence.

  3. The Secretary of State negotiates with foreign representatives. • The Secretary of the Treasury monitors national debt and recommends financial policy. • The Secretary of Defense oversees the armed services. • The Secretary of Interior oversees the management and conservation of public lands.

  4. The Secretary of Commerce oversees patents, trademarks and censuses. • The Secretary of Labor is responsible for occupational safety, wage and hour standards, unemployment insurance benefits, and re-employment services. • The Secretary of Homeland Security protects the country from terrorist attacks from the civilian sector and responds to natural disasters.

  5. Why is the presidential cabinet necessary for the proper function of the executive branch?

  6. HW The President has just offered you a job in any cabinet position you would like. SWEET! Choose a cabinet position and demonstrate your duties as that cabinet member. Write 2 examples of how you will fulfill your duties.
