  6. SAT Reasoning Test Formerly called SAT I 3 Sections Writing Critical Reading Math Deadline to register for the November 5 SAT is October 7. Late registration is October 21st. SAT Subject Tests Formerly called SAT II One hour in length Required by the most competitive colleges Check admissions requirements for the colleges you are considering What About SATs?

The ACT assesses students ability to complete college-level work The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science The Writing Test is optional The registration deadline for the December 10 test is November 6. To find out more, go to www.actstudent.org What about the ACT?

  8. Finding a College • Work with your School Counselor • College Fairs – September 22, October 6, and October 20 Randolph HS Cafeteria, 2:10 p.m.-parents are invited to attend! • Attend College Open House Programs • Make sure to VISIT colleges

WHAT COLLEGE WILL ACCEPT ME? • Reach School – Competitive school that may be beyond the reach of your high school profile. • Good Fit School – A school whose requirements and expectations are similar to your high school achievements • Safety School – a college you are confident you will be accepted

  11. Decisions, Decisions • Early Decision • Early Action • Regular Decision • Rolling Admissions

  12. Early Decision Applications • Different than “Early Action.” • Allowed only ONE application. • “Binding Contract.” • If accepted, you must attend that college. • You cannot apply anywhere else.

  13. Early Action Applications • Consider an “Early Action” application. • Application deadlines are usually in November. • Receive notification in December or January. • Early acceptances are reviewed earlier for scholarship money.

  14. Application Process at Randolph High School • Student Data Portfolio • Transcript Release Authorization Form • Pink Form • $2.00 fee, money order required • Turn these in at least TWO WEEKS before transcript needs to be sent • Keep track of deadlines!

  15. Responsibilities • Within two weeks of request, Guidance Office sends High School Transcript, Counselor Recommendation, and RHS Profile • Students must send Application, Essay, Application Fee- ONE month prior to application deadline • Students are responsible for ensuring that Teacher Recommendations arrive at selected colleges

  16. How many applications? • Send no more than 7 applications. • 1-2 “Reach” schools. • 2-3 “Good Fit” schools. • 2 “Safety” schools. • Consider the cost of application fees. • Some waive the fee for on-line applications. • Fee waivers are available. Please see your school counselor for more information

  17. What about Finances? • Talk to your parents & guardians- be realistic • Attend the Financial Aid Seminar in December • Research scholarships • Information on local scholarships will be available in February

  18. HOW TO PAY FOR COLLEGE • Financial Aid – Apply online or by paper -FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Register or apply for a PIN as soon as possible. -CSS Profile – College Student Services – Financial assistance profile required by some schools. Check to see if your college requires the CSS Profile. There is a fee to apply.

HOW TO PAY FOR COLLEGE -MEFA – Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (www.mefa.org) – Provides free information and counseling about applying for financial aid and options for paying for college. -TERI – (www.tericollegeplanning.org) – Provides free assistance in applying for financial aid

  20. Will you play college sports? • Check out the NCAA Clearinghouse for your responsibilities • NCAACLEARINGHOUSE.NET

  21. Other Options • Trade Schools • Technical Schools • Military • Specialized Programs -Certificate Programs • Work – Attend Job Fairs - Resume Builder on Bridges.com and MASSCIS • Talk to your School Counselor

  22. Don’t Worry, You Can Do It! • Senior year can be stressful, but we are here to help • Work with your school counselor • Keep on track • Watch deadlines • Nine months from now will be graduation!

  23. Community Service • Requirements: at least 60 hours by graduation • Benefits: college, employment, community, self • What’s available? See Mrs. Minihan & Ms. Engerman • Community service is not what we do, its who you are!
