More on Mammals in the Rainforest • Tigers • They live in tropical Rainforests in India, China, and some parts of Southern Asia. • They eat antelopes, boars, monkeys, pigs, birds and occasionally elephants. • They weigh approximately 400 - 600 lbs. and are approximately 5 - 10 ft. in length. • Gorillas • They are found in West Central Africa and along the Congo River. • They mostly eat leaves, fruit, and bark. • Males can reach weights of 500 pounds! • Females only get to about 200 pounds.

More Rainforest Mammals • Chimpanzees • West and Central Equatorial Africa is where Chimpanzees are found. • A chimpanzee will eat include seeds, fruits, leaves, bark, insects such as termites, and small prey. • They spend time both in trees and on the ground. • They usually sleep in a tree where it will build a nest for the night.   • Orangutan • These creatures live on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in Indonesia. • They eat tropical fruit and also leaves, bark and insects at times. • Orangutans can be found in rainforests as well as other forests at higher elevations and near lowland swamps. • They will sleep in trees as well as move through the trees in search of fruit.

More Rainforest Mammals • Capybara • It can be found in various regions of South America and in Panama. • Grasses, fruits and water plants are their favorite food. • It live near lakes, rivers and streams. • Capybara can hide in the water by holding their noses above water and submerging the rest of their bodies below. • Jaguar • Jaguar are found in Mexico, Central and South America. • They eat a variety of animals including turtles, tapirs and deer. • Rainforests, deserts and grasslands is where the jaguar calls home. • They will grow to be approximately 5.5 - 8 ft

6. Reptiles of the Rainforest • What is a Reptile? • They are cold blooded • Meaning they use the sun to regulate their body temperature. • They are all vertebrates • Meaning they all have a back bone

More Reptiles of the Rainforest • Short Necked Turtle • These Turtles can be found in creeks and lagoons in Australia and New Guinea. • They love to bask on logs and the sides of waterways. • They have short necks with large heads. • Eastern Water Dragon • Males can be distinguished by their larger size and red chest. • Dragon lizards in Australiacan grow up to one meter in length. • They are found all along the east coast of Australia, normally found around creeks, rivers or lakes. • Insects and aquatic organisms are their favorite food.

More reptiles of the Rainforest • Anaconda • This snake is found mostly in the Amazon River Basin. • They normally eat rodents, fish, birds, caiman, turtles and even larger mammals. • Anacondas often hunt by submerging all but its nostrils in the water and then wait for its prey. • They can reach over 37 feet in length. • Black Caiman • These reptiles are found in South America in the Amazon. • They eat fish, turtles, birds, capybara and sometimes larger mammals. • Black Caiman live near the rivers and streams of the Amazon. • They will grow to be 5 - 6 meters in length.

9. Birds • What is a bird? • Warm-blooded vertebrate • Covered in feathers • Has wings • Young birds are born from hard shelled eggs

More Birds of the Rainforest • Harpy Eagle • They can be found in and near the rainforests of Central and South America. • They eat sloths, monkeys, and other small mammals. • Harpy Eagles will grow to be approximately 35 - 41inches! • Harpy Eagle will lay 1 or 2 eggs in a 2 – 3 year time span. • Only 1 of the eggs hatches and the parents raise the eagle for about 6 months. • Toucan • They located in Central and South America in tropical and sub-tropical rainforests. • Toucans will eat mostly small fruit and sometimes insects. • It lives in holes of hollow trees. • Toucans can grow to be about 13 inches – 26 inches in height. • Toucans lay about 2 - 4 eggs per year.

More Birds of the Rainforest • Resplendent Quetzal • It is mostly found in Central America. • Their favorite foods are fruits that are associated with the avocado family, but they also eat insects and small animals. • They live in the cloud forests. • subtropical forests, often located in higher altitudes • It is roughly 14 - 16 inches in length.  Its long train of tail feathers adds an additional 24 - 25 inches. • Great Hornbill • It can be found in India, China, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. • The primary diet of the Great Hornbill is fruit, but it will also eat insects, lizards, snakes and small mammals. • Their Habitat is high in the canopy of the rainforest. • It can reach between 2.5 - 3.5 feet in length.

12. Amphibians • What is an Amphibian? • cold-blooded vertebrate • Start life in the water breathing through gills then transform into adults that breath with lungs. • They can live in they water and on land.

More Amphibians of the Rainforest • Red-Eyed Tree Frog • They are located in Southern Mexico, Central America. • These frogs eat mostly insects. • They tend to inhabit lowland rainforest areas near ponds, streams and rivers. • They will grow to be 1-2 inches in length. • Suriname Toad • They live in South American rainforests. • It can be found in rivers and slow moving streams. • They feed on small invertebrates and small fish. • They grow to be about 6-8 inches in length. • The male carries the tadpoles under his skin, on his back, until they literally explode out of the holes! 

14. More on Amphibians • Blue poison dart frog • They lack toe webbing and are poor swimmers, and are never found in the water. • They release toxins from the skin to protect themselves. • The lifespan of the Blue poison dart frog is about 4-6 years in the wild. • They grow to be about 1 – 1.5 inches long. • Tomato frog • The tomato frog lives in Madagascar. • To protects itself from predators it releasing a toxic glue-like substance from its skin. • It lives in swamps and shallow pools. • It eats mostly Invertebrates. • It is on the Endangered list.
