Choosing your strategy of handling your opposition’s views • Sympathetic audience • omit opposition • Neutral or Undecided audience • refute opposition • refute their reasons and grounds • refute their warrants and backing • concede to opposition • works best if you only concede to some of their objections

Looking at arguments in terms of audience’s (dis)agreement • Read Opening Exercise on page 166 • Read “Based . . . .Why?” on page 176, and write your response in the margin. • Reread versions 1 and 2 of Jones’s letter. • For the FCD on page 169, do the individual task. Write about 30 words. • In your small groups, do the small group task for that FCD on page 169.
