  9. SUMMER HAZARDS

  10. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A HEALTHY TAN! • A tan is a sign that the skin has been damaged. • Too much sun will speed up the ageing of your skin, making it leathery, mottled and wrinkled, but the most serious effect is an increased chance of developing skin cancer. • Over the last 25 years, the rate of skin cancer has risen faster than any other top 10 cancers in males & females. • Construction workers are six times more likely to develop skin cancer than the general population.

  11. HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF? • Keep your top on • Wear a hat with a brim or a flap that covers the ears and the back of the neck. • Stay in the shade whenever possible, during your breaks and especially at lunch time. • Use a high factor sunscreen of at least SPF15 on any exposed skin. • Check your skin regularly for any unusual moles or spots. See a doctor promptly if you find anything that is changing in shape, size or colour, itching or bleeding.

  12. What is Dehydration? • Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than you take in. • Water is essential for a healthy body • Some of the early warning signs of dehydration include: • feeling thirsty • lightheaded • having dark coloured, strong-smelling urine • passing urine less often than usual

  13. What to do to Prevent Dehydration • Drink plenty of fluids if you're dehydrated. This can be water, semi-skimmed milk, diluted squash or fruit juice, but it's best to avoid caffeine and fizzy drinks. • Drink often and in small amounts • Increase your fluid intake while exercising and during hot weather
