  1. The Daily 5 Read to Someone and Listen to Reading

Read to Someone – Why do we do it? • To read independently. • To grow as readers. • To become more self sufficient. • To increase the volume of reading. • To increase the level of attention to reading. • To increase reading motivation and love of reading. • To increase fluency, reading rate, and word attack skills.

  3. Read to Someone definitions: • EEKK – elbow, elbow, knee, knee. • I Read, You Read – student reads a page or paragraph and then the partner reads. • Choral Reading – partners read the same section at the same time. • Reading One Book – one book is shared and students take turns reading. • Reading Different Books – each student has a different book, they take turns reading, and then the partner checks for understand. • Check for Understanding – the “listening” child repeats what they heard and understood.

  4. Focus Lessons (pg. 62) • Day One: Model and practice EEKK, voice level, and check for understanding. Brainstorm I chart (pg. 66). • Day Two: Model and practice I Read, You Read. Practice check for understanding. Practice two different books. • Day Three: Brainstorm and practice how to choose books. Talk about it, make a deal (rock, paper, scissors). • Day Four: Brainstorm and practice where you sit. • Day Five: Model and practice how to choose a partner. Do silent signal, ask person if they want to partner. • Day Six: Model and practice coaching (pg. 74) or time.

  5. Listen to reading: focus lessons • Day One: Brainstorm I Chart expected behaviors (pg. 76). Model and practice listening and following with words, pictures and material set-up. • Day Two: Review I Chart. Model and practice putting materials away. • Day Three: Review I Chart. Model and practice listening to short stories and how to begin a new story. Model and practice what to do if work time ends before work is finished. • Day Four: Review I Chart. Discuss ways to share available materials.
