WHAT IS RESEARCH? • Reporting • This study calls for knowledge and skill with information sources and gatekeepers of information sources • Requires little inference or conclusion drawing • Descriptive • Discover answers to the questions who, what, when, where and how • May involve collection of data and may involve relating the interaction of two or more variables

  9. WHAT IS RESEARCH? • Explanatory • Goes beyond description and attempts to explain the reasons for the phenomenon • Uses of theories or hypotheses • Predictive • To evaluate specific courses of action or to forecast current and future values

  10. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH • To fulfill the need for knowledge of the organization, market, economy or another area of uncertainty • Process of gathering, recording and analyzing data for aid in making business decision

  11. RESEARCH PROPOSAL • A structured written plan for a study or investigation • Outlines the main problem to be investigated • Basic components of a proposal: • Introduction • Literature Review • Methodology

STRUCTURE OF PROPOSAL • Title • Should be clear, concise, compact, correct and unambiguous • 12 to 15 words in a single sentence • Should be an area of interest for the researcher • Should add value to the current field of knowledge • Avoid redundancy • Three important aspects: • Variables of study • Setting • Subjects of the study
