  2. Early Life • Ruby (Nell) Bridges was born on September 8th, 1954 in Tylerton, Mississippi. • In 1957 the family moved to New Orleans. • She was the first born out of her siblings. She had two younger brothers and one younger sister.

  3. Education • Ruby Bridges went to William Frantz Elementary School for first grade. • Ruby went to a white school; her teacher was also white. • Ruby went to a white school because she was chosen by a judge. In her state, blacks and whites went to different schools.

  4. Why She is Famous • Ruby is famous because she was the first black child to go to an all-white school. • So no one would hurt her, she had to walk into school with U.S. government marshals surrounding her with guns • Ruby stopped and prayed in the middle of a mob that was ready to kill her!

  5. Problems/Obstacles • Her brother died when she was very young. • That year, Ruby had to walk into school everyday with marshals around her so no one would hurt her. • Ruby was the only black girl that went to William Frantz Elementary.

  6. Interesting Facts • Ruby`s dad lost his job picking crops so they had to move to New Orleans. • Later, in Ruby`s first year of Frantz Elementary School, two white boys joined her class
