What is Webconferencing? Web conferencing is used to conduct live classes, meetings or presentations over the Internet. How to Choose What To Use? Two questions are crucial to determining which webconference solution to use: What do I want to do? What do I want the participants to be able to do?
Considerations when Choosing a Webconference Product Ease of use Do participants require an account? Anything to download? Self-testing audio/video Does it work on a Mac? Functionality you need Your comfort with doing the “background” work To record or to not record? This is the question! # of participants Price (if it's a one-off event, check out a trial!!)
Potential Academic Uses Guest speakers Team/group collaboration Team/group presentations Faculty or staff meetings Office hours Tutoring Include a group of distance learners in a f2f class Marketing Others?
Potential Academic Issues • Real-time – mandatory or optional participation? • Tied-in with a course activity? • Those viewing a recording may feel on the “outside looking in” • What happens if it crashes?! • Technological divide • Services hosted in the US – privacy concerns • Time commitment: practice, practice, practice before “going live”!!
