  2. Audio/visual Scheduling

  3. Audio/visual scheduling AbleLink Scheduler • Helps people with impaired scheduling skills to live more independently • By having their daily schedule on a PDA they can be reminded of events reducing the need for supervision • The PDA can be taken with them wherever they go

  4. Audio/visual scheduling AbleLink Scheduler • Uses a combination of pictures and spoken words to remind someone to do something, ideal if they have limited literacy • The events for the rest of the day are displayed but events that have happened are hidden to avoid confusion

  5. Audio/visual scheduling AbleLink Scheduler • Clicking on the date or time will speak them – try it

  6. Audio/visual scheduling AbleLink Scheduler • When it is time for an event a prompt screen is shown and an announcement made “There is a message, click on the screen to hear it” • The event message is then played back

  7. Audio/visual scheduling AbleLink Scheduler • When it is time for an event a prompt screen is shown and an announcement made “There is a message, click on the screen to hear it” • The event message is then played back

  8. Audio/visual scheduling AbleLink Scheduler • It is also possible to display a “Done” button and to have the message repeat periodically until the Done button is pressed

  9. Audio/visual scheduling Adding reminders • To set up an event is simple, it does not need a PC. • There is a library of images and the message is recorded simply by pressing the “record” button and speaking.

  10. Audio/visual scheduling Adding reminders • There is a comprehensive selection of recurrence patterns and a custom screen which allows irregular occurrences to be set up for the month ahead.

  11. Audio/visual scheduling Adding reminders • The Advanced screen allows the Done button to be activated and also allows another application to be loaded after the reminder has been given. Here a task prompting program will be launched with instructions how to make coffee

  12. Task Prompting

  13. Audio/visual task prompting • AbleLink Task Prompting programs help people who find sequencing difficult. • They can be used on PDAs or PCs and provide individualised, step by step instructions for tasks at home or in the workplace

  14. Audio/visual task prompting • The programs use a combination of images and spoken instructions to give step by step instructions. • The instructions use photographs of the user doing the task and recordings of a familiar voice.

  15. Audio/visual task prompting • The programs use a combination of images and spoken instructions to give step by step instructions. • The instructions use photographs of the user doing the task and recordings of a familiar voice.

  16. Audio/visual task prompting • Instructions can be repeated by clicking on the picture

  17. Audio/visual task prompting • A key feature is the ability to provide decision support • By offering up to four choices, the instructions can take into account different situations • Once a choice has been made subsequent instructions reflect that choice

  18. Audio/visual task prompting • Here the amounts of coffee and water relate to making two cups of coffee, if another number had been chosen the amounts would be different.

  19. Audio/visual task prompting • Here the amounts of coffee and water relate to making two cups of coffee, if another number had been chosen the amounts would be different.

  20. Audio/visual task prompting • As instructions are repeated consistently each time the learning process is optimised and the instruction set can be reduced over time

  21. AIMS TaskBuilder

  22. AIMS TaskBuilder • TaskBuilder is a simple PC application which allows tasks to be built quickly and easily. • By using photographs of the user doing the task themselves and either their own or a familiar voice, the user identifies easily with the task

  23. AIMS TaskBuilder • Each task is built using the editing tabs. • The task is built of steps which consist of an image, usually a digital photograph and an Audio instruction which can be recorded on the spot. • Choice steps can be used where there are optional pathways through the task

  24. AIMS TaskBuilder • The graphical interface shows the sequence of the task Step Icons Step, black dots show it is the step being edited EditingTab Choice step allows tasks to include optional pathways Arrows indicate the sequence of the task steps Graphical display of task steps

  25. Audio/visual task prompting • The completed task can be used on a PC or tablet using a suitable player or exported to a PDA for mobile use. • Task prompting is a powerful way of providing cognitive support both at home and in the workplace.
