  1. Church Division 1 Corinthians 1:10-13

  2. 10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, "I follow Paul," or "I follow Apollos," or "I follow Cephas," or "I follow Christ." 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 1 Corinthians 1:10-13 (ESV)

  3. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. Acts 15:39-40

  4. “For any system to be healthy, it has to be challenged; sometimes that challenge comes in the form of conflict. A healthy congregation is one that actively and responsibly addresses or heals it’s disturbances.” • Peter Stenke

  5. Biblical Standard of “One Another” 1. Be in agreement with one another – Romans 12:10 2. Accept one another – Romans 15:5 3. Carry one another’s burdens – Galatians 6:2 4. Tolerate one another – Ephesians 4:2 5. Forgive one another – Ephesians 4:32 6. Submit to one another – Ephesians 5:21 7. Comfort one another – 1 Thessalonians 4:9 8. Love one another – 1 John 3:11

  6. 1 Corinthians 1:10-13 • The appeal regarding division – v10 • The knowledge of the division – v11 • The cause of the division - v12

  7. “The number one cause of division in churches today is pride. People become proud of their influence and status, so much so that when you threaten their little seat of power, they will come out fighting. They will pretend they have the church’s best interests at heart, but the real issue is a matter of who’s in charge.” Pastor Bob Russell Southeast Christian Church, Louisville, KY

  8. Types of Church Conflict • Personality-centered Conflict • Principle-centered Conflict

  9. The most serious divisions in the church almost always occur over doctrine. “For a local church to be spiritually healthy, harmonious, and effective, there must, above all, be doctrinal unity.” John MacArthur

  10. 17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. Romans 16:17 (ESV)

  11. 1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call-- 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:1-6 (ESV)
