What is this course about? • A hope for the political future of democracy applying the principles of evolution to politics. • To give the message that when the old systems don't work anymore, we have reason for hope and celebration, for it is then that we begin to envision, just over the horizon, a new and ennobled political future.

  5. Our broken political systems are a symptom of progress. Far from being defeated, we are drawing closer than ever to our primary aim of true democratic government provided that we are conscious. • To become aware of the leadership styles that worked in the past cannot lead us successfully through the chaos and complexity of the 21st century global society.

  6. To examine the four stages of political evolution that gives us a broader perspective on our current political conflicts and offers a glimpse of the new form of leadership we will need in the future-the move to a more collaborative model of shared leadership and shared responsibility will require the effort of the many, rather than only the few, so that we can to bring back nobility to politics.

  13. History of Leadership Developmentin Nepal • Right to leadership traditionally gained through inheritance and was maintained by individual leader’s ability to sustain allegiance to even more powerful leaders/authorities.

  14. Beliefs that religious affiliation, family, caste and ethnicity pre-determined one’s position in life.

  15. Little belief in individual knowledge/capacity. • Leaders have little desire to challenge thinking that would in any way undermine authority of Leadership

  16. General consensus that the crisis of Leadership seems to be the striking evidence for most of the issues and obstacles/challenging consolidation of Democratic Governance in Nepal.

  18. Development has the same root as envelope. • Development literally means “de-enveloping” or opening up. • Higher virtues are nothing more than appreciating the laws of nature.

  23. The word politics has been a dirty word since time immemorial.

  24. Friends, neighbors want nothing to do with politics and politicians. Makes them sick.

  26. I receive looks of bewilderment and dismay. People wonder what has happened to me…why would I want to waste my time.

  33. Speaking vs. Listening • The power of word/ Language. • Humans invent their world in through language • Language shapes, defines and limits they way we feel, think and behave.

  34. Which is more powerful? Speaking/Listening • Already Always Listening (AL) • Conversation=Speaking + Listening • Request + Promise=Effective Action

  35. Given the political stigma, why would anyone want to become a political leader today? • Whether or not we know how to meet the change, the world is undergoing an unprecedented but inevitable shift toward global community and independent.

  36. And no matter how disappointed we may be in our efforts to meet that change so far, we always HOPE to do better in the future. • At the very heart of our desire for a positive is innocent HOPE.

  37. The Politics of HOPE is a confident anticipation of our new collective political vision and the ability to make that vision a reality. • HOPE without vision is lost. • Our political system is an ever-growing organism. • Because today we are experiencing Nepalese political system in a broken state. • It is tempting to believe that this brokenness is PERMANENT. • In the physical world we call this the law of inertia:all bodies at rest remain resting.

Feeling the inertia of the current state of Nepalese politics, we tend to enter a state of hopelessness, believing that nothing will ever change. • According to the same laws of nature, however, we have learned that species survive and thrive when they learn to work together, adapt, and support one another. Inertia isn’t forever. • Our democracy will grow and expand and ultimately break through to a new stage when we learn how to live and work collaboratively.

It is our HOPE that by examining the Four Stages of Political Evolution you will feel inclined to participate in the Politics of HOPE, which in turn will attract others who dare to believe in reviving the dream of democracy. • As in nature, the ineffective is dying and attempting to create it self anew. • There is nothing wrong in where we are now as a democracy. • Every beneficial change is preceded by a period of discomfort and awkwardness. • We might soon give up, except that HOPE calls us to go further and reach higher, to elevate humanity.

  42. Q. Who is a Conscious Public Leader? • Conscious public leaders seek first to know themselves. They have discovered their unique gifts and have made a decision to share those gifts with the world. • Conscious public leaders have made the leap from their individual interests to the well-being of the whole. They know that fear is magnified by chaos and grows during chaotic times. • The Four Stages of Political Evolution will help us to look into where we are now and where we are going.

  47. What is a Conscious Public Leader? A conscious political leader is one: • Who is fully conscious. • Who has awakened to the value and • Fully embraces collaboration as the ideal working model of leadership.
