  1. Lesson 11 • It is estimated that 6% of teens have depression. • What do you think are symptoms of depression? • Who can you talk to if you or someone you know is depressed?

Depressed mood Change in appetite Thoughts of death Inactivity Agitation Difficulty concentrating Feelings of worthlessness or guilt Chronic fatigue Anxious Over sleeping Insomnia- not sleeping Weight loss Weight gain Loss of pleasure Restlessness Irritability Headaches or stomachaches that don’t respond to treatment Symptoms of depression

What strategies are there for coping with depression? • Talk to parent, guardian, mentor, or other trusted adult • Stay connected with friends • Practice healthy behaviors- eating healthy, exercising • Use anger management skills • Practice stress management skills • Avoid alcohol and other drugs • Be resilient • Seek treatment if depression last more than two weeks

  6. What else can you do? • Write in a journal • Take medication on time • Get plenty of sleep • Don’t over do it

How can you be resilient? • Work on relationships with family members • Develop a close relationship with a mentor • Choose friends who are supportive • Deal with your feelings in difficult situations- don’t put them off • Avoid harmful behaviors as a way to cope • Ask for support • Join a support group • Be involved in school activities • Practice healthful behaviors • Volunteer
