I Fight Authority. Authority Always Wins. Rules are rules. Without them we’re all savages. Fighting is futile and ultimately self-destructive. When we refuse to acknowledge a higher authority than ourselves, we begin stepping back in time. Antigone was wrong and got what she deserved.

  1. I Fight Authority Authority Always Wins.

  2. Rules are rules. Without them we’re all savages. • Fighting is futile and ultimately self-destructive. • When we refuse to acknowledge a higher authority than ourselves, we begin stepping back in time. • Antigone was wrong and got what she deserved. • She didn’t even know what she was dying for. (translation/edition discrepancies) • Creon had to choose a good guy and a bad guy in order to maintain a civilized society.

  3. Rules are made to be broken. • What happens when we limit our freedom to speak out against the laws of a tyrant? • People become marionettes of a corrupt government when we do not challenge those laws which ought not to exist. • Antigone was completely justified in breaking the law to bury her brother, regardless of which brother it was. • Antigone’s death was a tragedy and she should be viewed as a martyr. • Creon as tyrant.

  4. Ch-Ch-Changes • After reading the play, do you disagree with your original statement? • If something changed your mind, be clear about it. • Did Creon win you over with his “someone had to say yes” speech? • Did you cry real tears when Haemon died with Antigone?

Alone With my Principles • After reading the play, do you KNOW you were SO RIGHT? • What in the play strengthened your position? • Did Creon’s kind treatment of Antigone make you feel like he was just a guy doing his job? • Did Antigone’s inferiority complex when it came to Haemon alienate you?

  6. The Paper (you knew was coming) • Write a well thought-out essay, either defending your original statement or justifying your change of heart. • Your paper should use the play as it’s primary source text for justification of either position. (Antigone by Jean Anouilh) • 12 point font, double spaced, with works cited page. • Maintain appropriate conventions of grammar, spelling, and style. Don’t turn something in to me that you wouldn’t turn in to your Language Arts teacher. • The paper is due on Thursday, October 18 (B day) or Friday, October 19 (A day) and is a test grade.
