Update on Beam Stability and Emittance Measurements - Sunday, 23rd May

On Sunday, 23rd May, stable beams were observed from 6 AM, with the ramp completed without OFB. Emittance values at injection, particularly for B2V, were large and showed growth. The last wire scans were performed at 11:25, revealing discrepancy issues that resulted in beam loss at 12:35 due to a tracking error on B1 MKD. Measures were taken to mask the issue while readiness to inject resumed by 14:00. Further emittance measurements and a ramp for physics were conducted later, culminating in stable beams by 21:30, although overlap issues in ATLAS need addressing.

  1. Sunday 23.05 • Stable beams from 6am. Ramp was done without OFB • Emittances large at injection (particularly B2V) and then grow • Last wirescans made at 11.25 • B1h 7.2 B1v 9.6 • B2h 6.0 B2v 11 • Beams lost at 12.35 • Traced to a tracking error on B1 MKD, generator L • As there is built-in redundancy, expert masked the channel, but an intervention will be done at the next occasion. There is probably a problem on a sensor. • Ready to inject around 14.00 • BQM extraction inhibit; LHC probe beam almost not visible on mountain range display. Longitudinal structure missing. PS RF. • Pilots injected around 16.00 8:30 meeting

  2. Sunday 23.05 • Measured and corrected orbit, Q, Q’, injection oscillations and phase • Done using bucket 2001 • Fill for physics. But did not inject into bucket 1 • Emittance measurement (without bucket 1)B1 H : 2.4 B1 V : 2.4B2 H : 3.6 B2 V : 3.5 • Dump and fill for physics • Emittance measurements (with bucket 1)B1 H : 2.4 B1 V : 2.6B2 H : 2.8 B2 V : 5.1 • Seems tha all bunches are OK except for bucket 1 • Ramp for physics around 18.00 • Stable beams 21:30 – good lumi • Problem to ovelap beams in ATLAS. Large offset in H, just within the tolerance. • To be looked at in the next fill – need bare correction to clean. 8:30 meeting

  3. Monday 24.05 • 00:30: Lost beams – internal dump LBDS • 04:00 Ready gain – new internal dump LBDS at injection. • Access required to fix power trigger • 09:00 Ready to go again… 8:30 meeting
