  2. A thesis statement is not a statement of fact. “Chihuahuas are a small breed of dog.”

  3. A thesis statement is your essay’s controlling idea. It’s the big idea. It’s a statement that you need and intend to prove in the essay.

  4. First, think of your thesis statement as a debating question: “Resolved: Dogs make God-awful pets.” Next, drop the “resolved.”

  5. “Dogs make God-awful pets.”

  6. Then sharpen the thesis. Add the word “because” or one of its equivalents and finish the thought.

  7. “Dogs make God-awful pets – they require time-consuming TLC, they’re slobbering mess makers, and they cost an arm and a leg to care for.”
