  3. NIAS in Brief • Extablished in 1952 under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. NIAS’s mandated tasks : - Planning and designing national research programs (both short term and long term) in Animal Science. - Implementation and management of approved national research programs. - Undertaking studies on animal breeding and genetics to improve animal performance. - Undertaking studies on animal feed, nutrition and related issues including feed analysis, nutrient requirements for different species of animals and feeding regimes.

NIAS’s mandated tasks (continued) • Undertaking studies on animal housing, manure managements and economic analysis. • Making recommendations on animal production policy for the Government. • Efficient utilization and management of human resources and natural resources in animal production • Organizing training courses for Farmers, technicians, graduates, and organizing higher education courses (PhD) • - Designing and organizing and implementing research and development collaboration with internal and external partners within the country and internationally.

  5. NIAS organization and structure • - NIAS contains: 3 main sections 1. Functioning departments: 4, located in the headquarter 2. Research department: 8 including a Laboratory for biotechnology, located in the headquarter 3. Research stations and/or centers: 10 located in whole Vietnam from the North to the South. - Total staff: around 1300 people, of which PhD holders: 50 and Master holder and Graduated: 450

  16. This lab can analyses DM, OM, CP, CF, NDF, ADF, Ca, P and others: including micro elements, amino acid, toxin, growth promoters in feeds and animal tissues. Lab for animal product and feed analysis

  17. Recently, NIRS (Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy) installed and used for research (CIRAD funded) 2004, one Respiration chamber (USA Made) was purchased, installed and used for research on energy requirement of animals and methane emission. Lab for animal product and feed analysis

  19. One experimental research station located 500 m from Headquater of NIAH where: indor experimental facilities, Lab scale, pilot scale. Two research centres: one for pig, one chicken near by NIAH Indoor experimental facilities

Experimental Animals • Animal species for research and for breeding purposes. • Cattle (dairy and beef): 500 heads. • Pigs: 1300 sows) • Chicken, common ducks, moscovy ducks, ostrich • Goat, sheep, rabbits • Manure stores: each research centre has their own • Land area for crop trials: 100 ha • Animal manure traetment i.e. biogas digester, composting facilities.

  32. Animal Feed, Nutrition Research 1. Nuritive Requirements of Animals: Dairy cattle, water fowls: Ducks and Muscovy duck. (Thailand and Japan at Khonkhaen University: MEm for local Thai cattle, local buffalo, Brahman around 52, 71 and 80 % MEm for Japanese black cattle. MEm of HF in Thailand = 84 % MEm for HF (AFRC, 1999) 2. ME and Protein value of feeds commonly used in animal rations: Cattle, Pig and Poultry (see Dr. Thong’s presentation) 3. Introduction and evaluation of new feed evaluation systems under Vietnam condition: such as French system for cattle (Forage Unit for lactation, Forage Unit for beef and PDI), new ME and Protein systems for poultry and pigs(see Dr. Thong’s presentation)

Molecular genetic characterization of indigenous breeds of animals to determine(within and between-breed diversity parameters; identify the geographical locations of particular populations, and/or of admixture among populations of different genetic origins; implement gene mapping activities, including identification of carriers of known genes; identify parentage and genetic relationships (e.g. DNA fingerprinting) within populations; support marker assisted genetic improvement of animal populations) 4. Analysis of polymorphisms in the candidate gene associated with production traits: Milk production; Meat quality; Growth performance and Litter size 5. Analysis of genetic variation associated with antibody production and disease resistance / susceptibility: MHC genes; Mx gene; TAP1 gene; Nramp gene… to select local breeds of animals having genetic resistance to diseases
