  3. ● PARLIAMENTARIANS ● • Have direct impact on the preparation of national legislation • Responsible for approving and allocating of national budgets • Can convey UNESCO’s message to the grassroots communities

Cooperation with Parliamentariansat Internationallevel Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) • Established in 1889 • International organization of Parliaments • 148 national parliaments and 7 international parliamentary assemblies (February 2007) • Administers institutional co-operation between UN and its Special Agencies • Agreement with UNESCO concluded in 1997

Cooperation with Parliamentariansat regional level ● Agreements with: • Parlamento Latinoamericano (1994) • Parliamentary Assembly for Francophonie (2005) ● Cooperation on ad hoc basis: • Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe • European Parliament • African Parliamentary Union (APU) • Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) • Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA)

  6. Cooperation with Parliamentariansat national level • Creation of Parliamentary Focal Points for UNESCO in charge of relations with National Commissions • Permanent link between the activities of the Parliaments and those of National Commissions

UN-HABITAT • The United Nations Human Settlements Programme,is the United Nations agency for human settlements. • MoU concluded in March 2005 UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments) • Established in May 2004 • Largest world organization made up of cities and national associations of local authorities in over 127 countries • Agreement approved by UNESCO’s Executive Board

  9. ●UNESCO CLUBS● ?? What are UNESCO Clubs ?? • Groups of people of all ages, from every kind of social and professional background and origin, from all over the world, who share a firm belief in the ideals of UNESCO • Members of UNESCO Clubs work as volunteers to implement UNESCO’s ideals at grass roots level • Disseminates UNESCO’s objectives and promotes UNESCO’s values in local communities

UNESCO Clubs: Key dates • 19 July 1947: Very first UNESCO Club created in Japan • 4 November 1949: Mr Jaime Terres-Bodet, then DG of UNESCO, launched an appeal for the creation of UNESCO Clubs in secondary schools and universities • April 1978: 1st World Congress of UNESCO Clubs • July 1981: Creation of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs • Today: More than 3600 UNESCO Clubs in over 90 countries

Main functions of UNESCO Clubs • Training • Dissemination of information • Action Roles of National Commissions • Provide necessary information and/or advice • Verify whether the new Club subscribes to the UNESCO founding principles + non-profit activities • Give official recognition and permission to use the Organization’s name

Regional Federations of UNESCO Clubs • Asia and Pacific Federation (1974) • Afirican confederation (1999) • European Federation (2001) • Arab States Federation (2005) • Latin America and Caribbean Federation World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centre and Associations (WFUCA) • provides general co-ordination services • Encourages active co-operation among National Federations through interregional and sub regional programmes

National Commissions for UNESCO Permanent bridges linking UNESCO with the civil society Extended arms of UNESCO • Best position to judge the very value of UNESCO’s partners • Raising UNESCO’s profile at national level • Providing advice/ information about UNESCO and its programmes. • Providing relevant documentation (legal instruments, facts, statistics, data etc) • Organization of / participation in briefing sessions (Seminars, roundtables, lectures, etc)
