  6. God in Genesis and John’s Gospel • In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… (Gen 1:1) • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (Joh 1:1) • John’s Gospel and Genesis depict Christ as the Spoken, Written and Living Word.

  7. Summary: God is revealed in His Word and in creation • The Spoken Word created the world in Genesis. • Written Word is the Decalogue…or Moral Light • ( “…written by the finger of God…” Deut 9:10) • Living Word is the historical record of Christ’s appearance on Earth, according to the Gospels.

  8. Symbols of Creation presented in Genesis and John’s Gospel • Day 1: Light • Day 2: Water/Sky • Day 3: Soil/Seed/Seedling • Day 4: Sun/Moon/Stars • Day 5: Birds/Fish • Day 6: Man/Mammal/Reptile • Day 7: Rest

  9. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 1: Light shines in Darkness • And God said, Let there be light. And there was light. And God saw the light that it was good. And God divided between the light and the darkness. (Gen 1:3-4) • In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. There was a man sent from God; his name was John. This one came as a witness, to bear witness concerning the Light, so that all might believe through him. (Joh 1:4-7)

  10. Symbols Christ in Genesis and John • Day 2: The Sky,Water (and Wine) • And God said, Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. (Gen 1:6-7) • And I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water, that One said to me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining upon Him, He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. • (Joh 1:33) • His mother said to the servants, Whatever He says to you, do it. And there were six stone waterpots there, according to the purification of the Jews, each containing two or three measures. Jesus said to them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. (Joh 2:5-7) • For My people have committed two evils; they have forsaken Me, the Fountain of living waters, to hew out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. (Jer 2:13)

  11. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 2: Sky/Water (Wine) • But the land which you are entering to possess it is a land of hills and valleys, drinking water from the rain of the heavens. It is a land which Jehovah your God cares for. The eyes of Jehovah your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even to the end of the year. And it will be, if you will listen carefullyto My commandments which I command you today, to love Jehovah your God and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, I will give the rain of your land in its due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. (Deu 11:11-14) • Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness! For they shall be filled. • And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (Phi 2:8) • The Spirit breathes where He desires, and you hear His voice, but you do not know from where He comes, and where He goes; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit. (Joh 3:8)

  12. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 3: Soil/Seed bearing after its kind • And God said, Let the earth bring forth tender sprouts (the herb seeding seed and the fruit tree producing fruit after its kind, whose seed is in itself) upon the earth; and it was so. And the earth brought forth tender sprouts, the herb yielding seed after its kind, and the tree producing fruit after its kind, whose seed was in itself. And God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:11-12) • Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (Joh 3:3) • That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (Joh 3:6) • But even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, ( Resurrection, Rebirth, Regeneration, Forgiveness, Redemption)(Joh 3:14)

  13. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 3: Soil/Seed bearing after its kind… • For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. (Joh 3:16-17)

  14. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 4: Sun/Moon/Stars (or Bridegroom) • And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to divide between the day and the night. And let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years. And let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth. And it was so. And God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the smaller light to rule the night, and the stars also. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night; and to divide between the light and the darkness. And God saw that it was good.(Gen 1:14-18)

  15. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 4: Sun/Moon/Stars (or Bridegroom) • The heavens declare the glory of God; and the expanse proclaims His handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor are there words; their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth and their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun, and he comes forth as a bridegroom from his canopy; he rejoices as a strong man to run a race, going forth from the end of the heavens, and its course is to their ends. And there is nothing hid from its heat. (Psa 19:1-6)

  16. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 4: Sun/Moon/Stars (or Bridegroom) • He who has the bride is the bridegroom, but the friend of the bridegroom who stands and hears him rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Then my joy is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all; he who is from the earth is earthly and speaks from the earth. He who comes from Heaven is above all, and what He has seen and heard, that He testifies, and no one receives His testimony.(Joh 3:29-32)

  17. Symbols of Christ from Genesis and John • Day 4: Sun/Moon/Stars (or Bridegroom) • For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who practices truthcomes to the Light so that his works may be revealed, that they exist, having been worked in God.(Joh 3:20-21) • Samaritan woman; five husbands, fornication;her witness to Samaritans(light source, luminary)

  18. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 5: Birds (Heavenly Agents of God) and Fish (Fishers of Men) • And God said, Let the waters swarm with swarmers having a living soul; and let birds fly over the earth on the face of the expanse of the heavens. And God created great sea-animals, and every living soul that creeps with which the waters swarmed after their kind; and every winged fowl after its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:20-21) • Behold the birds of the air;for they sow not, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them; are you not much better than they are?(Mat 6:26)

  19. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 5: Birds (Heavenly Agents of God) and Fish (Fishers of Men) • Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work. Do you not say, It is yet four months, and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes and look on the fields, for they are white to harvest already. And he who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit to life eternal, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. And in this is the saying true, One sows and another reaps. I sent you to reap that on which you bestowed no labor. Other men labored, and you have entered into their labor. (Joh 4:34-38) • Labor for bread that perishes (temporal labor), Bread of Life, Manna in the Wilderness

  20. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 6: Man (Upright) , Mammal (Horizonal), Reptile • And God made the beasts of the earth after its kind, and cattle after their kind, and all creepers upon the earth after their kind. And God saw that it was good. And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over all the creepers creeping on the earth. • I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. But he who is a hireling and not the shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away. And the wolf catches them and scatters the sheep.(Joh 10:11-12)

  21. Symbols of Christ in Genesis and John • Day 7: Rest and Gratitude • And the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made. And He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it,because in it He had rested from all His work which God created to make.(Gen 2:1-3) • Jesus said …, I am the Resurrection and the Life! He who believes in Me, though he die, yet he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this? (Joh 11:25-26) • Jesus answered…, Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God? Then they took away the stone where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You hear Me always, but because of the people who stand by I said it, so that they may believe that You have sent Me. (Joh 11:40-42)

  22. …Jesus said …, do you love Me … ? … Feed My lambs. (Joh 21:15)
