  1. Hall A Status Hall A Collaboration Meeting June 9, 2011 Robert Michaels Acting Hall A Leader • Recent Activity • Publications (please write archival papers ! ) • Upcoming Schedule of Experiments • Procedures to Decide 12 GeV Schedule • Manpower and Budget

  2. In Memoriam ArunSaha Friend, Colleague, Hall A Scientist “He will be missed by his many colleagues, friends and associates, who will remember both his kind and gentle spirit and his many contributions to nuclear physics.  Arun is recognized world-wide as a leader in the study of nuclear structure …” ( JLab site-wide announcement , May 9, 2011)

  3. Recent (2011) Activity in Hall A Feb 22 Completed D - Threshold (B. Norum) Mar 1 Bob Michaels appointed as acting HA leader Mar 9 Completed N-Delta (N. Sparveris) Apr 13 part I of SRC triple coinc. (E. Piasetzky) Apr 15 Completed e08009 He4 (A. Saha) May 6 Review of upcoming g2p/GEp (N. Liyanage, chair) May 8 Completed x > 2 SRC inclusive (P. Solvignon-Slifer) May 13 part II of SRC triple coinc. (E. Piasetzky) May 13 begin 6 mo. Shutdown, prepare for g2p/GEp

  4. 12 GeV Experiments (some still unrated by PAC) Days Major New Equipment (e.g. tritium target or SBS) GMp (elastic FF at high Q2) 24 none (Moffit et.al.) A1n (neutron spin structure) 23 none (Bogdan W., et.al.) DVCS (GPDs) 100 none (Hyde et.al.) APEX (dark matter) 34 none (Bogdan W., et.al.) GMn, GEn (high Q2 FF) 75 SBS (Bogdan W., et.al.) GEp (high Q2 FF) 45 recoil polarimeter (Bogdan W., et.al.) in SBS Possible early running Continued ….

  5. 12 GeV Experiments (continued) Days Major New Equipment (e.g. tritium target or SBS) SIDIS w/ SBS conditional SBS (Bogdan W., et.al.) 6. Possible Other Experiments Major New Equipment Hypernuclear Physics new 12 GeV prop. ? HKS, new septum magnets (conditional 6 GeV) (Tang, et.al.) PREX-II 25 none (Michaels, et.al.) SRC ? none ? Polarized Proton SIDIS in preparation SOLID Other new ?

  7. “Strawman” Flow-Chart for Schedule Hall A is the first to take beam in 12 GeV Era !! Meanwhile … Commissioning Phase (Hall A = beam dump for tests and engineering runs. No physics promised, but may be possible ?) Mid- 2013 - Fall 2014 Early Experiments ? 12 GeV Experiments Begin (research-quality beam in FY15) Build SBS , Stage Moller and SOLID Apparatus Fall - 2014 - Fall 2015 SBS Experiments Continue to Stage Moller and SOLID ~2015 Moller & SOLID Experiments (interleaved with other experiments , e.g. SBS. need removable apparatus) ~2017+

  8. How to Decide Plan for Commissioning Plan for Early Experiments Schedule for SBS Schedule for Moller and SOLID Interleaving of Experiments Depends on Availability of Commissioning and Research Beam Funding Realities Scheduling Constraints of other halls. Input from Users Scientific Leadership of Lab DOE deliverable: FY15

  9. Input from Users Hall A Coordinating Committee to Select a Planning Committee. Suggested membership: subset of spokespersons of approved experiments. E-mail and phone meetings prior to HA Collab. Mtg. (twice per year). Chairman to report findings at HA Mtg. Recommend priorities for sequence of commissioning and early experiments. Recommend priorities for sequence and interleaving of large-project era experiments (SBS, Moller, SOLID).

  10. Manpower and Budget Exercises for Rolf, aiming towards FY18 Hall A manpower • Adding an electrical engineer (power supplies) • Made a young designer permanent (C. Soova) • Hope to add tech(s) • # of Scientist Staff to remain constant (rel. to FY2004) Hall A budget desires ( supplemental to Ops ) • 4.5 M$ SBS MIE (submitted) • ~0.8 M$ tritium target • 0.5 M$ each for DAQ & Compton upgrades • ~0.6 M$ possible Hypernuclear spectrometer • 21 M$ for Moller (fairly accurate; MIE not submitted yet) • 21 M$ for SOLID (very rough estimate) completed = 11 permanent + 2 postdocs In progress

  11. The Future of Hall A ? g2p/GEp 12 mo. Shutdown and Early Experiments no promised beam Possible Commissioning Experiments SuperBigbite Era Run Moller & SOLID Prepare Moller & SOLID 2014 2012 2017 2018 2011 2013 2015 2016 Time (actual years)

  12. Parting Thoughts • Hall A Leader position -- should be decided this summer • (I think) • An experiment planning process may be discussed by CC. • Start this in ~Oct, topics for winter collab. mtg. • Need to strengthen & increase the Hall A collaboration • Timely publications • Archival papers important ! • Give seminars, colloquium, invited and • contributed talks at conferences.
