  12. SLD WG Update Mark Burton (Greensocs), November 2007

  13. Overview • Overview Status for SLD • Goals from TVWG • Mid-term - unchanged.

  14. System Level Design WG Status • 2.2.1 release done and dusted • Numerous minor fixes • Adapters and monitors now OCP-2.2 compliant • CoWare and Sonics providing most of the effort • Next release planning awaiting developments • Will there be an OCP-2.3 • Do we have funds to do a major re-write for OSCI alignment

  15. TVWG status

  16. The SLD Mid-Term Vision - unchanged • OUR KIT IS HIGH QUALITY, AND STABLE. • Ensure that OCP users have a 'complete' modelling infrastructure available • multiple levels of abstraction (pure-functional to cycle-accurate) and use models (software development, architecture exploration, etc) • completeness means • bus interface , performance monitoring interface ,system debug interface and configuration interface • Make this modelling infrastructure standards compliant. • E.g. drive existing OCP-IP experience and expertise into OSCI-TLM • Maintain alignment between OSCI-TLM OCP-IP

  39. Specification WG 2007 Plan Release OCP 3.0 by end ’07 comprising: • Cache Coherence extensions • Consensus profile(s) from key OCP-IP members for IP providers • Power management signaling (based on TI proposal) • (Tentative) New extensions from members (FPGA?)

  40. Specification WG Status • Cache coherence subgroup meeting regularly • Making progress, but somewhat delayed • Consensus profiles work largely agreed • 3 profiles overall • Simpler two profiles almost signed off • Significant challenge agreeing on “Advanced High-Speed” profile • Protocol extension being proposed • Power management signaling proposal from TI • Sonics and TI iterating/attempting to reach consensus

  41. Specification WG Issues • Cache coherence work will not finish until mid-’08 • Doesn’t appear to be a business issue for anyone • BUT, has been used against OCP by ARM and Power.org • Now looking at a few challenging questions • When to release next Specification • How to document and release new profiles • How to resolve proposed write model change

  42. Issue 1: Next Specification Release • Current proposed extensions are relatively minor • Power management (“OCP Disconnect”) • Potential write model extension • (Big) cache coherence work due in ~6-9 months • So: • Push out all extensions until 3.0 (wait for coherence) • Create small 2.3 release to cover • How concerned are we about Specification “churn”? • Proposal: defer extensions to 3.0; prepare Spec. documentation revision to cover profiles

  43. Issue 2: How to Publish New Profiles • Profiles are guidelines, not specification • Can release document revision without going to 2.3/3.0 • What form should the profile documentation take? • Parameter tables (cheap) • Separate document (very expensive) • Something in-between? • Proposal: document in new chapter/appendix • Concise description of features • Pointers into rest of Spec. for details

  44. Issue 3: Proposed Write Model Extension • Current Specification description • Whether all writes have responses (or not) • Whether write posting is explicit (or not) Proposal tochange this

  45. Proposal (Toshiba) • We propose a new definition for the combination of these two parameters as below • Configuration for no-use of the write response • (writeresp_enable,writenonpost_enable) = (0,0) • Configuration for use of the write response and no-use of the non-posted write • (writeresp_enable,writenonpost_enable) = (1,0) • Configuration for use of the non-posted write and no-use of the write response for the posted write • (writeresp_enable,writenonpost_enable) = (0,1) • Configuration for use of the non-posted write and use of the write response for the posted write • (writeresp_enable,writenonpost_enable) = (1,1) • This proposal means that it enables that the non-posted write can be used without using of the write response.

  46. Why is This Contentious? • Justifications in favor • Higher performance • Significant contention whether this is real • Easier to understand • New proposal more consistent with packet systems (PCIe) • Justifications against • Current OCP write model adopted in 2.0 • Significant investments around existing model • New proposal creates non-obvious choice for users • More difficult to understand? • New proposal not consistent with other on-chip interfaces • AMBA, CoreConnect, VCI - and PCI!

  47. Why is This Issue Being Raised to GSC? • First time where we have significant contention in Spec. WG! • Issue is blocking progress on consensus profiles • Would likely be included in advanced profile • Do we want to decide this by a WG vote? GSC vote?
