  13. A Church and a Pastor • Christians are designed by God to be intimately connected with a church body • Christians are designed by God to have a spiritual shepherd, a pastor, who loves them • Pastors are called to sacrificial love, not seeking their own popularity, advancement, or comfort.

  15. Paul’s Approach to a Person in Grievous Sin 2 Corinthians 2:5 • “If anyone has caused grief” • “He has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you”

  16. 2 Corinthians 2:6 “The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him.” Three areas of sin require discipline from the church body • Gross Immorality • False teaching regarding the gospel • Divisive behavior that wounds the body of Christ

  17. 1 Corinthians 5:2 “And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this?”

  18. 1 Corinthians 5:4-5 “When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.”

  19. 2 Corinthians 2:7 “Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.”

  20. Four Common Mistakes • The church fails to discipline, keeping the offender among them. • The church disciplines but the offender fails to repent. • The offender repents, but is too ashamed to be restored to the church. • The offender repents but is not properly forgiven by the people of the church.
