  1. US - Canada Joint Ice Working Group April 30 - 02 May 2002

  2. Highlights From2002-2003 • 2002 Meeting in Falmouth/Woods Hole, MA • Focus on North American Ice Service (NAIS) • Guest speaker: RADM (Ret) Richard Pittenger, USN (Ret.), VP for Marine Operations, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) • “Ice Capable Research Vessel.” • Tour of WHOI • “Iceberg Smith” Presentation

  3. Operations CommitteeHighlights • Product Harmonization - Analyses/Outlooks/Fcsts • Exchange of Personnel for Training/Orientation • Presentation to Ray Assel – Great Lakes Environmental Engineering Laboratory (GLERL) for New Climatology • Implementation of IICWG Colour Code. • Implementation of IICWG SIGRID-3 Format..

  4. Information TechnologyHighlights • Complete Conversion to Internet for Data Transfer • Database on Great Lakes Freezing Degree Days • Conversion of Imagery Data to Common Format • Initiated Discussions of Architecture/Data Model • Established Mechanisms for Regular Exchange of Information Between Centres on System Architecture, Hardware, and Software Developments in Each Centre.

  5. Science and Remote SensingHighlights • Two meetings of NIC and CIS science groups in addition to JIWG. Priorities and areas of mutual interest identified. • QuikScat: exchange of information on algorithm development and validation studies. • C-ICE: NIC participation in CIS field experiment to collect data on the strength of decaying sea ice. • NIC attendance at CIS sponsored polarimetry tutorial and workshop. • Implementation at NIC of CIS developed false color SSM/I ice classes. • NIC/CIS participation in NASA Data Assimilation Workshop to stress importance of data assimilation to operational sea ice analysis.

  6. Iceberg CommitteeHighlights • Renew agreement between USCG IIP and CIS. • Develop and implement a plan to verify the new iceberg drift and deterioration model. • –using drifting buoys? dyeing icebergs? • Develop protocol/procedure to implement SOLAS reg.6, Chap 5 (2002 changes) on cost recovery • IIP aircraft visit to Ottawa (May 29-31) for technical exchange, media exposure for the collaborative activities of the JIWG

  7. US-Canada Joint Ice Working Group June 25 – 27, 2003 Montreal, Quebec, Canada

  8. North American Ice Service(NAIS)

  9. Concept • ‘Virtual’ ice centre • build on strong cooperation of JIWG • Combine the strengths of each nation’s center of excellence in sea ice analysis • Provide the highest quality, consistent ice information products for North American waters

  10. Concept (2) • Leverage resources • national data sources • expertise • product/data archive centers • training, science • system development and procurement • ‘Partners in NAIS’ concept - NIC, CIS, (IIP), …? • independent organizations maintain their identities • identified as a contributor and partner in NAIS products • may continue to service unique clients independently (e.g., U.S. Navy, Cdn. Coast Guard)

  11. Vision 2015 • common core set of North American ice products, issued jointly • integrated production processes • location of production indistinguishable to user • common point-of-access • analysis and forecast layers placed in common on-line database • on-demand, user generated products • user-specified content, presentation, delivery • software and data-linked analysis stations

  12. Common Elements • access to data sources and data model • core software and analysis processes • training curriculum and training cycles • research and development goals • integrated science plan • approach to the next generation of workstation • possible joint development and procurement

  13. Status • Annex to MOU: MSC - NOAA/NESDIS • April 2003 signature • Project Implementation Plans in development • Management, Operations, IT, Science • state 1, 2-3, 5, 10 year goals • activities, strategies, barriers and mitigation • Many initial activities undertaken in 2002

  14. JIWG Experience • information exchange • technical cooperation • operational cooperation • harmonized products • integrated processes and joint products • model for IICWG?
