As the freezing temperature and chilly wind add taste to kimchi, a new Korean film brings this fermented vegetable dish to the big screen this winter. The movie is titled ‘Sikgaek 2: Kimchi Wars.’ It is the sequel to the 2007 hit film with the same title ‘Sikgaek,’ which was based on various episodes from a comic book series by famous cartoonist Huh Young-man. Unlike the previous film that presented a wide variety of traditional Korean dishes, the new ‘Sikgaek’ focuses on kimchi, a representative Korean side dish and health food, also gaining popularity around the world. The film shows Seong-chan, who must compete against Jang-eun to make the best kimchi dish. 2 1 6 Issue & Debate ▶Reading Comprehension Video Tech-aided refereeing in World Cup The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa ended recently with the Spanish team raising the FIFA trophy for the first time in World Cup history. The first World Cup held in African soil made headlines with 64 exciting games and the dazzling sound of the vuvuzela, giving joy and excitement to all football fans around the world. But this World Cup was also stained by a series of missed calls by referees, including the two that helped eliminate England and Mexico from the World Cup. England lost to Germany 4-1 and Mexico lost to Argentina 3-1. These two fatal errors created a worldwide furor, putting pressure on FIFA that has long opposed allowing technology-aided refereeing system. Now, a fresh round of debate on this issue is going on. Proponents of the instant replay point out that the soccer field is simply too large. It is nearly impossible for several referees to track the activities of 22 players on such a vast place. That makes players frequently penalized unjustly. They also say that the World Cup is the highest stage in soccer and demands the highest quality, accurate judgments. So, using technology as a tool to assist referees is necessary. In addition, they insist that instant replay is already in use in other major sports such as baseball, basketball, tennis, hockey, cricket and rugby. However, opponents fear that instant replays during the game are likely to disrupt the flow of the game with referees checking the screens every time there is a request for video replays. They also say that human error in making judgments by referees is also a part of the game and the World Cup has been successful for 80 years without instant replays. FIFA suggested that it will reopen the debate and look again at introducing high-tech methods to improve the refereeing system of World Cup games. This came after FIFA President Joseph Blatter apologized to England and Mexico team officials for the two costly errors by referees. So, should advanced technology meet football games to make referees get the calls right in the future World Cup tournaments or not? You may find out FIFA’s answer four years from now, in Brazil. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.

2 1 7 History ▶Reading Comprehension Cleopatra: The Last Pharaoh of Egypt Recently, researchers have found three chambers buried beneath a temple near Alexandria, Egypt. They believe the chambers may hold the remains of Queen Cleopatra and Marc Antony. Despite a century-long effort, archaeologists have never found the tomb of the most beautiful woman in the world. However, they are discovering growing evidence that Cleopatra’s priests carried her body to the temple after her suicide, where she could lie with her lover Mark Antony. Born in 69 BC in Alexandria, Egypt, Cleopatra, at the age of 18, became a co-ruler with her 12-year-old brother Ptolemy XIII. After three years, she was driven out of the throne by her brother. When Julius Caesar seized control of the Egyptian palace, Cleopatra had herself smuggled into the palace in an oriental rug. When the rug was unrolled, Cleopatra tumbled out. Caesar was bewitched by her charm and became her lover that night. Caesar restored Cleopatra to the throne. When Caesar was assassinated by Brutus and Cassius in 44 BC, Mark Anthony and Octavian defeated Brutus and Cassius, and took control of the Roman Empire. Anthony met Cleopatra at Tarsus, and spent the winter in Alexandria. In 37 BC, when Anthony returned to Alexandria, they got married. Since Anthony and Cleopatra were so arrogant, calling themselves gods, Octavian declared war on Egypt. In 31 BC, Antony’s forces fought the Romans in a sea battle off the coast of Actium, Greece. In 30 BC, Octavian reached Alexandria. When he was defeated, Anthony stabbed himself and died in Cleopatra’s arms. After Anthony’s death, Cleopatra knew she would be treated as a slave and humiliated so she had an asp, which was an Egyptian cobra, brought to her hidden in a basket of figs. She died on August 12, 30 BC at the age of 39. The Egyptian religion declared that death by snakebite would secure immortality. Her death marked the end of the Egyptian Monarchs. Cleopatra was the last Pharaoh of Egypt. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.

2 1 8 Places In The News ▶Reading Comprehension The Kuril Islands -A Disputed Territory between Russia and Japan Next year, Russian ministers, including the defense minister, will visit the Kuril Islands, the center of a long territorial dispute between Russia and Japan. The purpose of their visit will be to explore various development and support systems for the islands. The name Kuril originates from Ainu. ‘Kur’ of Kuril means man. Both countries have claimed sovereignty of the Kuril Islands since the 1952 Treaty of San Francisco after the Second World War. The territory stretches approximately 1,300 km northeast of Hokkaido to Kamchatka, separating the Sea of Okhotsk from the North Pacific Ocean. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Kuril Islands were explored by Henry James, DanilaAntsiferov, I. Kozyrevsky, and others. Including 35 active volcanoes and 100 dormant ones, the Kuril Islands consist of 56 islands in total. It is not uncommon to see hot springs around the islands. In addition, earthquakes frequently occur. The weather is extremely cold with long winters during which heavy snow falls. But in summer, it is mostly cool, and often foggy with a high percentage of humidity. With resources such as sulfur and iron pyrites, the islands are not only in a valuable strategic position but also hold potential economic value. However, fishing remains the most important local industry. At present, the islands belong to Sakhalin Oblast, an area under Russian jurisdiction. Under the Treaty of St. Petersburg signed in 1875, it was agreed that Japan would relinquish all rights to Sakhalin in exchange for Russia ceding the Kuril Islands to Japan. After the Second World War, the islands were returned to Russia. Japan’s sovereignty claims over the Kuril Islands still continue. However, it seems that the vast majority of Russians don’t want to cede the islands to Japan. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.

2 1 9 TOEFL Reading ▶Reading Comprehension Zionism Zionism refers to the international political movement by the Jewish, which supports the reestablishment of a homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine. The area is called the Land of Israel which is also known as the Jewish Biblical homeland. The Zionist movement has continued, primarily supporting the modern state of the Israelites since the foundation of Israel. The modern movement began mainly in Europe as a response to anti-Semitism across Europe. It has grown dramatically since then, becoming dominant among other Jewish political movements. The movement was formally established in the late 19th century. It encouraged the migration of Jewish people to the land promised by God according to the Bible. Jewish migration to Palestine started since early 1880s with most of the immigrants coming from Russia at the beginning. In 1897, the first congress was formed at Basel, creating the World Zionist Organization (WZO). It later led to the success in establishing Israel, the Jewish homeland in 1948. The term “Zionism” derived from the word “Zion.” Under King David, it referred to the city of Jerusalem and the Land of Israel. The Israelites were also referred to as the people, sons or daughters of Zion in the Bible. Zionism is different from Territorialism, which is also a Jewish nationalist movement that aims to establish Jewish territory, but not necessarily in the Land of Israel. Zionism aims to fight all kinds of anti-Semitism. Zionists believe that Zionism can put an end to anti-Semitism. They prefer to speak and modernize Hebrew language, giving themselves Hebrew names, etc. Since the foundation of Israel, the role of Zionism movement has become far less important. However, the ideology still takes a critical part in the Israeli and Jewish political minds. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.

2 1 10 Economy ▶Reading Comprehension Woes Of agflation Recently, crop price has been increasing globally including Korea. It’s becoming a big issue since experts are worrying about the global food price hike such as the one in 2008. The price of agricultural products in Korea increased by 3.6 percent in July, compared to the same month a year ago according to a government survey. Global crop prices such as wheat are also surging as Russia and other major producers of the crops decided to reduce exports due to their poor harvests. However, the central bank and the finance ministry of Korea expressed different views on the rising global crop prices and its possible impact on the economy. The Ministry of Strategy and Finance denied the possibility of a rapid consumer price increase such as the one shown between 2007 and 2008. In contrast, the Bank of Korea considered the price increase as the possible threat of inflation this year. Then what does agflation mean? The term is derived from a combination of the words “agriculture” and “inflation.” It is an increase of the price of food that occurs as a result of increased demand from human consumption and use as an alternative energy resource. It’s very important to control agflation since the price increases are largely related to the consumers’ spending on food. Interest in alternative energies contributes to agflation. In order to produce bio-fuel such as ethanol, manufacturers need to use food products such as soybeans and corn. This creates more demand for these products, which causes their prices to increase. Unfortunately, these price increases spread to other non-fuel related grains such as rice and wheat as consumers switch to less expensive substitutes for consumption. Furthermore, agflation will also affect non-vegetable foods like eggs, meat and dairy products as the price increases for grain will make livestock feed more expensive as well. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.

2 2 2 AP/Reuters ▶Reading Comprehension Viva Chileans! Thirty-three Chilean miners were rescued dramatically after being trapped for 69 days underground. The Chilean miners began their unfamiliar new lives as national heroes and tasted what awaits them outside the hospital doors --a deluge of TV producers, writers and even soccer teams all desperate for a piece of their story. Meanwhile, the families and friends of the men of the San Jose mine were organizing welcome-home parties, street celebrations, big dinners and even a few weddings. None of the miners are suffering from shock despite their harrowing entrapment, a reflection of the daily care and feeding sent through a narrow bore hole by a team of hundreds. Even a team of psychologists helped keep them sane. Unity helped the men, known as "los 33", survive for 69 days underground, including more than two weeks when no one knew whether they were alive. After weeks of fear, desperation and finally hope, the miners were pulled out one by one in a capsule that carried them through a narrow tube of solid rock --a dizzying 23-hour marathon of rescues. ”The guys that were down there, I think they never lost their hope,” he added. “There were critical moments, but at the end they never lost their hope because they had very positive leaders who kept the group unified,” said Manuel Gonzalez, the first rescuer down and the last to leave. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.

2 2 3 Entertainment ▶Reading Comprehension 'Sanctum’ Journeys into the Unknown James Cameron’s new 3-D action-thriller movie was released on February 10. 'Sanctum,’ inspired by a true story, is about a group of people who explore one of the biggest caves in the world. The cave is the most beautiful, but least accessible --no one knows what is down there. They plan to find out how the water in the Esa-Ala cave makes its way to the sea. The group, including a millionaire and his girlfriend, a father and son, and a former diver, is trapped in the deep cave in Papua New Guinea when a cyclone blows. The explorers have no other choice but to find a way out. As they struggle to make it out alive, they encounter obstacles in their path. They must fight raging water, deadly terrain and creeping panic as they search for an unknown escape to the sea. Master diver Frank McGuire has explored the South Pacific’s Esa-Ala Caves for months. But when his exit is cut off in a flash flood, Frank’s team, including 17-year-old Josh and financier Carl Hurley, is forced to radically alter plans. With dwindling supplies, the crew must navigate an underwater labyrinth to make it out. Soon, they are confronted with the unavoidable question: Can they survive, or will they be trapped forever? Shot on location off the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, ‘Sanctum’ employs 3-D photography techniques Cameron developed to lens Avatar. Designed to operate in extreme environments, the technology used to shoot the action-thriller will bring audiences on a breathless journey across plunging cliffs and into the furthest reaches of our subterranean world. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.

2 2 4 Sports ▶Reading Comprehension Egypt wins African Nations Cup Egypt clinched the African Nations Cup title, defeating Ghana 1-0 in the final held in Luanda, Angola on Jan. 31. The African nation reached the top, owing to the tournament’s top-scorer Mohamed Gedo’s goal finishing Mohamed Zidan’s pass in the 85th minute. It was Gedo’s fifth goal in the competition. Ghana’s offense struggled throughout the game. AsamoahGyan, who had scored three out of four goals that his team had marked on their way to the final, failed to score in the final match. After Gedo’s goal, the Ghanaians tried to recover, but could not find a way through the solid Egyptian defense, missing good chances. The Pharaohs became the first nation to win the trophy three times in a row and a record seventh in total --a continental record. ”We said we were the champions from the first day we arrived in Angola, and we would defend our title. We have won three titles in 2006, 2008 and 2010, but this was the most difficult of all of them,” said ShawkyGarib, the assistant coach of the Egyptian team to the reporters. Meanwhile, Nigeria beat Algeria 1-0, owing to striker ObinnaNsofor’s goal in the second-half, finishing third place. 2 2 5 Culture ▶Reading Comprehension Drama Chuno Flying High Masculine charm of muscular actors shines on the small screens, captivating viewers of KBS TV’s new action historical TV series on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The title of the drama is ‘Chuno.’ The word ‘chuno’ literally means ‘to chase escaped slaves.’ The time is set in the mid 17th century, after the end of second invasion of the Korean peninsula by Manchu Chinese forces, known as the ‘Byeongjahoran War.’ It shows a story about Lee Dae-gil, who was a ‘yang ban (traditional ruling class or nobles during the Joseon Dynasty),’ but later becomes a slave hunter. Dae-gil chases Song tae-ha, who was a prominent military officer but gets forced into slavery after getting involved in a political conspiracy. Actor Jang Hyuk plays Dae-gil and Oh Ji-ho stars as Song Tae-ha. Renowned actress Lee Da-hae plays the role of slave Eon-nyeon, who later buys freedom from slavery and experiences rising of her social status with a new name Kim Hye-won. She makes friends with Song Tae-ha, who is chased by her former master Dae-gil. Thanks to a catchy story with dynamic action and romance, ‘Chuno’ is currently one of the top-ranking TV shows with ratings of more than 30 percent. The drama seems to be successfully continuing the popularity that the blockbuster spy drama ‘Iris’ enjoyed last year. This 24-episode drama is also scheduled to air in Japan in April, with hopes of continuing the Korean wave or ‘hallyu’ in Japan. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.

2 2 6 Issue & Debate ▶Reading Comprehension Is Wikipedia Valuable? Wikipedia is a free, multilingual, open content encyclopedia project operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Launched in 2001, it is currently the largest, fastest-growing and most popular general reference source available on the Internet. It is, by far, twenty times larger in its volume of words than its closest counter-part, encyclopedia Britannica. However, the amazing success of Wikipedia has prompted many criticism and questions regarding its reliability, and also, its implications on knowledge exchange. The supporters say Wikipedia is equally accurate and reliable as Encyclopedia Britannica. To prove this, experts selected and then, compared the competing articles from both sides. The result showed that Wikipedia had 162 such problems, while Britannica had 123, which means there’s not much difference between the two. They also point out that Wikipedia is constantly updated while traditional encyclopedias are not. Traditional encyclopedias might be revised annually. But Wikipedia’s current affairs articles, as well as older articles being edited, are updated thousands of times an hour. That’s a big deal, especially if your interest is in current affairs, recent science, pop culture, or any other field that changes rapidly. In addition, Wikipedia does have strong standards. For example, all contributors are highly encouraged to cite their sources. As traffic increases, Wikipedia is continuously improving in quality and depth as well as its standards. This is likely to attract more experts, who follow their own very high standards. However, others refute this point of view saying that the quality of Wikipedia articles does not always improve over time. More quantity doesn’t always beget better quality and there is no assumption that Wikipedia’s quality will improve as the website grows. Perhaps it might even get worse as it gets bigger. Also, Wikipedia’s openness prevents it from winning full public trust that Britannica enjoys. Wikipedia enables anyone to edit from anywhere at anytime and this can make Wikipedia not reliable. Besides, Wikipedia lacks the important process of peer-review. There are articles written by an arbitrary group of people whose knowledge and ability could range from expertise to amateurism that lacks proper knowledge.
