  2. Where is it? • It’s one of Yorkshire’s main rivers • Source at Malham Tarn • Passes through Leeds City Centre • It ends in the bigger river Ouse • This means the Aire is a tributary

  3. It’s origins • We can trace it’s origin back to 1704, over 310 years ago • Some of the river is canalised • In places, the river is hidden underground out of sight • It’s 71miles (144km) in length

  4. Where it got it’s name • It is not very clear what Aire means but some suggestions are: • Strong river, or • Strife or fight, or  • Shallow water • I personally think as it’s a big river that it would be strong and wild

  5. Past and present use • Locks were created between Knottingley and Leeds to allow boats to travel along the river • In the older times the river carried coal in compartment boats called “Tom Puddings!” • later use AKA now, it carries oil and sand • It is now supposed to be a pleasant place for a walk or hike
