  1. THE ORANGE ORDER Set up in 1795 after a battle between some Protestants and some Catholic “Ribbonmen”. It is an exclusively Protestant organisation which has as its aim the protection of Protestant culture and position in Ireland. However it has an anti-Catholic edge, it sees Catholicism as a threat to Protestant liberty, and has a mindset that sees Protestant domination of power as essential to Protestant security and freedom. You cannot marry a Catholic as a member.

  2. THE ORANGE ORDER It gets the name from the house of Orange in the Netherlands, where the Protestant King William of Holland was from before he was invited to take the throne of England from the Catholic King James. They fought a war in Ireland, Catholics supported James, Protestants supported William. Protestants feared they would lose everything if James won.

  3. THE ORANGE ORDER William won at the Battle of the Boyne and it is this victory (1690) that the Orange Order celebrates every summer during marching season. They see it as a victory for liberty and a battle that secured their position and power in Ireland.

  4. THE ORANGE ORDER However after this battle the Penal laws were put in place that meant Catholics were second class citizens and denied many basic rights. They were kept weak to ensure Protestants would remain strong. So although the Orange Order celebrates the Battle of the Boyne as a victory for liberty it took rights and liberty from Catholics and set up a system of Protestant Ascendancy (domination

  5. THE ORANGE ORDER Many Catholics are offended by such marches and see them as a celebration of sectarian domination and inequality dressed up as a parade for freedom. (freedom for Protestants only) They point out that Orange Order thinking means that freedom for Protestants is linked to Protestant domination of Catholics. They argue that celebrating a battle that meant freedom for one part of the community by denying the other part of the community freedom is divisive.

  6. THE ORANGE ORDER It has exerted a lot of influence in Northern Ireland. Most of the B-specials were in the Orange order. Between 1921-1972 , 51 of the 54 cabinet ministers were members. 87 of the 95 backbenchers were members.

  7. THE ORANGE ORDER Many believe it to be a bigoted (prejudiced) and intolerant organisation that creates fear and plays on the divisions and hatreds of the past. The order itself would say it just expresses, defends and celebrates Protestant culture and historic events important to Unionists.
