  1. FEEDBACK ON THE GIVER, ASSIGNMENT #2 • Many of you referred to Gabriel as this little temporary guest. • Others wrote: Gabriel, who had not yet gained the weight appropriate to his days of life nor begun to sleep soundly enough at night to be placed with a family unit.

  2. Here’s another… • Asher was assigned the position of Assistant Director of Recreation because his corrections and apologies are very prompt.

  3. The lesson we (and I mean you) must learn… • These are NOT your words. They belong to Lois Lowry. I will inform her that you are stealing from her if you do it again! Plagiarism is a serious offense.

  4. Then, there are errors like these… Jonah was chosen…. OR He was miss under stud…. REALLY? I MEAN REALLY?

  5. When will I get my Giver #2 assignment back and what grade did I get? You will get it in a few minutes. First, I want to show you what “4” responses look like. You may come argue about your grade with me, but I will use these answers as my“4” standard.

  6. QUESTION 1 was:What did Jonas’s family have to do in order for Gabriel to be allowed a second year of Nurturing?

  7. In order for Gabriel to be allowed a second year of nurturing, Jonas’s father had to make a special request to the elders in the community. The elders decided that Gabriel could stay in the Nurturing Center another year, but he would spend his nights with Jonas’s family unit. Also, each member of Jonas’s family unit was required to sign a document saying that they would not become too attached to Gabriel and that they would let him go to a different family unit when the time was right.

  8. Question 2 was: What assignment was Asher given, and why did the community believe he was qualified for that specific assignment?

  9. Asher was given the assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation. The community felt that was the perfect job for Asher because he had a childlike personality. He liked playing games, and as a young child, sometimes he got into trouble or didn’t use the “precision of language” the community required. The community probably felt that he would be patient when working with children since he wasn’t the perfect child himself.

  10. 3. What job was Jonas selected for, and why did the community believe he was qualified for that specific assignment?

  11. Jonas is not assigned a job the same way his friends are. Instead, he is “selected” to be the new Receiver of Memories. The elders in the community watched Jonas throughout his childhood and decided he was smart and honest and he has something called “the capacity to see beyond.” We don’t know exactly what this is, but it probably has something to do with the fact that Jonas seems to be able to see colors and others can’t.

  12. Notice this person did copy the term “the capacity to see beyond” from the text, but they put it in quotes. Smart kid!

  13. Some final stuff (oops, I mean tips for doing well in English class)… **Type your work. **If you do handwrite, use blue or black ink only. Pencil and red or pale green ink is _____ (to, too, two) difficult to read.
