Shared Learning Targets • Know: I will learn that historians and archaeologists are like detectives when they use tools to study the past. • Learn : I will learn this by watching a short clip, PowerPoint and then reading section 1.1 in textbook. • Show: I will demonstrate what I have learned by having a discussion with class and completing a guiding reading sheet.

  4. Ask questions • Looking at the clues • Examining evidence • Observe • Come to conclusions

  5. Historical Detectives look at clues…… • Situation……Imagine you live thousands of years into the future and have uncovered the following bag. • This is USING EVIDENCE – ARTIFACTS.

  6. This Is The First Object. • What is it? • Writing on the back says “ Happy Graduation , love Mom and Dad

  7. So, What Do We Know So Far? What clues do we have ? Can we start to make assumptions? Who might the owner be?

  8. Here Is The Next Object. • Why would you have these? • What does this tell you about the owner?

  9. What Does This Object Tell Us? • Do you know what it is? • What does this tell us about the persons character? • Remember we are only making ASSUMPTIONS! • These may not be FACTS!

  10. The Final Item in the Bag is.. • What is this? • IS it what you think it is? • What does it tell us about the owner of the bag? • Does the rest of the information help us to decide what it might be for?

  11. Time to decide..put all the clues together…. Be a historical detective. Describe who the bag belongs to.

  12. Questions to explore What tools did we use to understand the past and try to figure who the backpack belonged to? Remember you are pretending you are living thousands of years into the future. What is the connection between geography of a place and history?
