  12. Night of Legends: Traditions of Márton and Luca Days8th December 2011 Students surfed on the Internet and collected material about Hungarian traditions of the period in English to improve their foreign language skills. Traditions and Customs of Márton and Luca Days The most famous folk tradition of the given period is making the Luca stool. The name Luca is originated from the Latin word Lux (light, brightness). According to the legend Lucia lived in the ancient times and became a martyr of Christianity. In memory of her martyrdom the annual making a stool is still a living folk tradition from the thirteenth of December. The stool had to be made by a young man and it had to be so strong that he could stand on it. If the young man was able to bring the Luca stool secretly for the Midnight Mass in the church on the 26th December and stood on it, he was believed to see the witches. After that, however, he had to escape very fast ... .
