Objectives and Responsibilities Internationalising the higher education institutions To increase the international appeal of Germany's higher education institutions and research institutes for students,academics and scientists from around the world Individual scholarships for Germans To promote young German academics and scientists in their studies and research abroad Individual scholarships for foreigners To promote young, international elites at German higher education instituions and research institutes Promoting German studies and the German language abroad To raise interest in the German language and culture and a knowledge of and empathy with Germany through (worldwide) cultural exchange Educational cooperation with developing countries To promote the academic, scientific, economic and democratic advancement of the developing and reform countries

  7. DAAD programmes to internationalise Germany's instituions of higher education 1. Development of internationally attractive study and research opportunities, for example: • International (English-language) degree programmes • Foreign visiting lecturers • Restructuring of doctoral degree programmes 2. Creation of better framework conditions for foreigners • e.g. TestDaF • Guidance counselling at institutions of higher education • Foreigners and labour laws

DAAD Programmes for Africa South of the Sahara • Long-term research fellowships (PhD-level) • Sandwich-fellowships (PhD-level) • Short-term fellowships (Junior staff level) • Study (research) visits (senior academic staff) • Re-invitation fellowships for former DAAD fellows • Scholarships for Students of German Language • Scholarships for postgraduate courses in Germany • In-country/in-region postgraduate scholarships for faculty • German and African visiting lecturers • Follow-up contacts with former DAAD fellows

DAAD Programmes for Africa South of the Sahara Short-term fellowships (Junior staff level) • Applicants: PhD candidates or recent post-docs • Duration: 2-6 months Study (research) visits (senior academic staff) • Applicants: Professors or other senior academic staff member of universities or research institutions • Duration: 1-3 months Re-invitation fellowships for former DAAD fellows • Applicants: former DAAD long-term fellowship holders • Duration: 1-3 months

DAAD Programmes for Africa South of the Sahara Other programmes of co-operation with African countries: • Scholarships for Students of German Language and Literature • Scholarships for postgraduate courses in Germany • In-country/in-region postgraduate sholarships for university staff development • African regional networks for graduate training and research • German and African visiting lecturers • Follow-up contacts with former DAAD fellows (Alumni programme)
