Life Story • Born in January 17, 1706 in Boston Massachusetts. • Father was a candle and soap maker. • 15th of 17 children • youngest son • Benjamin went to school to become a minister. • Parents could not afford it so they pulled him out of school. • He continued with his reading. • Continued with his education until he was 10.

  7. Life Story (continued) • Benjamin parents were Puritans. • He (just like his parents) believed that it was important to be honest and diligent, to work hard and to always try to be a good person.

  8. Learning the Trade • He was apprenticed to his brother James at age 12 to learn the business of printing. • By 17, Ben was able to work in any print shop. • As a result, Ben was able to leave Boston and find work in Philadelphia and London.

  13. Poor Richard’s Almanack • Poor Richard was a pseudonym used by Franklin. • Poor Richard’s Almanac was wildly popular in the colonies. • The Almanac contained the calendar, weather, poems, and astronomical and astrological information.

Poor Richard’s Almanack • In the spaces that occurred between noted calendar days, Franklin included proverbial sentences about industry and frugality. • People in the colonies used almanacs for a mixture of seasonal weather forecasts, practical household hints, puzzles, and other amusements they offered.
