  9. GSDI Definition "The Global Spatial Data Infrastructure supports ready global access to geographic information. This is achieved through the coordinated actions of nations and organizations that promote awareness and implementation of complimentary policies, common standards and effective mechanisms for the development and availability of interoperable digital geographic data and technologies to support decision making at all scales for multiple purposes. These actions encompass the policies, organizational remits, data, technologies, standards, delivery mechanisms, and financial and human resources necessary to ensure that those working at the global and regional scale are not impeded in meeting their objectives”

  10. 3. GSDI: The Road Ahead “...we are living at a time where we have to share a common SDI vision but this will be achieved by having a distributed system of responsibilities.” Santiago Borrero. Interviewed by GIM International, August 2002, Volume 16 Number 8 “Cooperation, Coordination and Integration Amongst Global and Regional SDI Initiatives” A 2002 Case Study conducted by the GSDI chair and the NSDI of Colombia (ICDE)

  11. 3. GSDI: The Road ... (cont.) There are more than 160 initiatives based on the use of geodata as a SDI component There are more than 63 documented SDI initiatives at all levels New initiatives growing fastly (e.g., INSPIRE, Global Land Cover, ...) Need to concentrate the GSDI on how to: Sustain and fund NSDI activities Focus on capacity building for NSDI Cooperate, Coordinate and integrate global actions

  23. 4. Introducing the GSDI ASSOCIATION • General bylaws and statutes approved in 22/04/02 • Recommended organizational structure pre-approved in 18/07/02 • Incorporated as a not-for-profit association in the state of Virginia in accordance with USA regulations in 06/08/02 • Intended to be a self-sufficient organization supported by membership dues and funds from donors • Interim Executive Board to migrate from Steering Committee to new rules, representing the main GSDI stakeholders

  24. 4. Introducing ... (cont.) • Current Secretariat without modifications • The Mission of the Association is, mainly, to serve as the focal point for the community involved in advancing SDI at the global level to support sustainable social, economic and environmental development. • The Goal of the Association is, basically, to support the establishment and expansion of globally compatible spatial data infrastructures. As well, it promotes better public policy and scientific decision-making.

  25. 5. Conclusion: Making Spatial Data Interoperable for All Nations The new GSDI Association provides a unique opportunity for all those interested in facilitating access and applicability of spatial data to promote new development alternatives and democracy, specially for Developing Nations. Being this inclusive, by recognizing the existence of a multi-diverse society, the GSDI Association must be an exemption in the context of current criticism to globalization processes.
