I. Beware of misguided motives • A proper spiritual focus is a safeguard. • Rejoice in the Lord (1) • Watch out for evildoers (2) • Promote legalism • Sap the spirit of worship • A proper spiritual focus has the appropriate confidence. • Put no confidence in the flesh (3) • Glory in Christ Jesus alone (3)
II. Beware of misleading accomplishments • Paul had more reasons to put confidence in himself. • Met all the religious traditions • Excelled at all the religious activities • Zealous • Legalistically righteous • Paul considered it all loss. • Compared everything to knowing the Lord • Considered everything else as rubbish
III. Beware of mismanaged goals • To know Christ is to be found in Him. • A righteousness through faith in Christ. • Comes only from God • It is by faith • Not a righteousness from the Law. • It is our own • It is an attempt to earn God’s approval
III. Beware of mismanaged goals • To know Christ and the power of His resurrection • Having the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings • Expecting to attain to the resurrection from the dead
