  1. The History and Description of the Insulin Pump What Technology Can Do!

  2. Why did research for the pump begin? • In 1979, people responsible for making the Pacemaker began to look into a way to control diabetes because of all the heart problems it was causing their patients. • In 1980, research began at the Applied Physics Laboratory at John Hopkins University.

  3. Sequence of The Insulin Pump • 1983: first pump on market, called the Minimed 502 • Same year came out with 502A and was considered a technological breakthrough in size and programmability.

  4. Sequence of the Pump Continued • In 1986, the first Insulin pump was implanted. This became the most successful implantation ever. • In 1996, the Minimed 507 was introduced and had many new features that the patients had told the company that they wanted, such as dual wave bolus, unlimited basal rates, and increased memory.

  5. Sequence of the Pump continued • In 1999, Minimed came out with a new edition to the 507. This new pump was called the 508 and is able to operate by remote control, has a low volume and no delivery alert, and has the capability to be downloaded to your home computer or directly to your doctor for input.

  6. Wrap Up • Technology has been the only reason that people with diabetes are living longer healthier lives today. • I owe my health to the smart doctors and scientists who care enough to help others.
