  2. IF SO YOU MAY HAVE THIS SKIN INFECTION- PITTED KERATOLYSIS

  3. Pitted Keratolysisis a superficial bacterial infection of the skin, confined to the stratum corneum of the soles, characterized clinically by superficial crater pits and erosions.

  4. SYMPTOMS • Excessive foot odor • Painful feet, which can limit function and make it hard to walk. • Occasionally burning, itching, and soreness in the feet. • Shallow, crater-like pits on the area.

  5. CAUSES AND HOW TO PREVENT THIS • Caused by wearing tight and restricting footwear and excessive sweating • Wear airy shoes like sandals or open-toed shoes. Your shoes should not be too snug. • Change socks frequently. • After exercise be sure to thoroughly clean your feet. Dry after cleaning so they do not remain warm and moist. Pitted Keratolysis is a bacteria, and thrives in tight, moist environments.

  6. TREATMENT • Topical fusidic acid ointment over two to three weeks • In recurrent or severe cases, a two-week course of oral erythromycin or azithromycin • Sometimes, preventing sweating from the feet, drying the feet, and wearing loose shoes have cleared this up

  7. 53% of cases was recorded in volunteer soldiers in a study conducted in South Vietnam, where heat, humidity, and boots combine to produce a ideal environment for this disease. • Though most cases are on the feet, some occur on the palms of hands. • People of every age, race, and sex can develop this infection. • Also known as Sweaty sock syndrome • Pitted Keratolysis is not deadly, just smelly.
