Dementia. What is it?. Term used to describe 100 conditions that are characterised by progressive and irreversible loss of brain function. As brain function deteriorates, dementia interferes with normal behaviour patterns and affects memory, language, speech, attention and personality.

What is it? • Term used to describe 100 conditions that are characterised by progressive and irreversible loss of brain function. • As brain function deteriorates, dementia interferes with normal behaviour patterns and affects memory, language, speech, attention and personality. • In 2010 dementia was the 3rd most common cause of death. • Dementia accounts for around 4% of the total burden of disease in Australia.

Costs • Intangible • Experience a range of emotions such as anger, sadness, frustration, fear, despair • As the condition progresses, individuals may not be able to participate in sports • Family of those who suffer from dementia may experience sadness if the patient doesn’t remember them anymore

  7. Health promotion strategies to address the problem • ‘Know the signs’ of dementia. Aims to raise awareness of dementia by providing educational posters and brochures for display and public areas • Living with memory loss program provides people with early stages of dementia and their families and carers tailored program that include information, advice and peer support to assist them to come to terms with their condition and plan for the future • Your brain matters. Aims to promote healthy behaviours that may increase the risk of dementia

  8. Your brain matters Your brain matters is a program initiated by Alzheimer's Australia, a nongovernment organisation that rises awareness and works to reduce the risk of dementia. Based on scientific evidence, your brain matters focuses on improving modifiable risk factors in order to reduce the risk of developing dementia. Your brain matters works by providing a number of recourses including the brain health program, the brainy app, and dementia related health sheets.
