  3. Today will be… • Consider some general principles about global health and the impact on nursing • Identify diseases distributed in community • Identify how to measure global health • Recognize the challenges of global health • Identify the Nurses’ Role in Access to Global Health • Recognize the International Nursing Organization

  4. At first of all : • Changes in professional roles and the movement of people across national and international boundaries make it important to understand healthcare and nursing issues in a global context.

  5. Definition of global health • Global Health , the term indicates an area of study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide

  6. Cont.….. *Global health is concerned with systems, the interdependence between them and how they impact on the experience of healthcare at local, national and international levels”……. . Anne Marie Rafferty’s) *And concerns any health issue that transcends borders, requires global cooperation and collaboration from multiple disciplines, aims to achieve health equity and embraces population-level prevention, as well as clinical care.

  7. Goal of global health *Improve public health and strengthen U.S. national security through global disease detection, response, prevention, and control strategies. *The goal of the global health community is usually to get health on the agenda of such major conferences and it judges them successful if they deliver – preferably binding – commitments for advancing global health and its determinants, especially in terms of responsibilities and financing

  8. Fields of issues of global health social Health system Environment Health and disease In community Genetic physical Culture

  9. No matter where we live , our well-being depends on how health issues are managed around the world because of: • Travel • Inadequate public health infrastructure • Urbanization • Globalization of trade • Aging and chronic disease • Epic natural disaster • Infectious diseases

  10. Are we preparing nurses forroles in Global Health?? *contribute to saving lives by improving health throughout the world: Advocacy , Building alliances and Communicating Ideas and best practices

  11. 21st century Nurses engage in…. • Health service delivery , advocacy • Develop cooperation ,policy ,training and research • Bring groups together to network for global health: non-governmental organization ,private companies and government

  12. How can we develop new models for global health ?? • Collaboration between schools of nursing • Joint research projects • Faculty and student exchanges • Global health content in courses • Course development for international health

  13. challenges to global health  **Fall into three main categories: • First are broad-based problems — such as pollution, overpopulation and strained resources — that affect the entire planet. When people lack basics, including food and water, they are likely to suffer health problems, he points out.

  14. Cont.… • The second problem is economics. With 1.4 billion people living on $1.25 a day, according to The World Bank, poverty is a major factor in global health. “If that many people are living below the poverty level, the health budget is going to be miniscule and everything else that affects health will be less than optimal,” says Nathanson.

  15. Cont.. • The final impediment to improving global health “social development.” Non-economic concerns, such as literacy and women’s rights, can help create a foundation for community-based health care systems even with limited financial resources.

  16. Measures of global health • Disability-adjusted Life Year (DALY) • Quality-adjusted Life Years (Qalys) • Mortality Rate

  17. Disability-adjusted Life Year (DALY) * measure of overall disease burden, expressed as the number of years lost due to ill-health, disability or early death. It was developed in the 1990s as a way of comparing the overall health and life expectancy of different countries. • DALYs for a disease or health condition are calculated as the sum of the Years of Life Lost (YLL) due to premature mortality in the population and the Years Lost due to Disability (YLD) for people living with the health condition or its consequences

  18. Quality-adjusted Life Years Qalys • QALYA population health indicator that combines the quantity and quality of life. It is typically used to indicate the output of a new therapy on a whole-population basis

  19. Mortality care • The death of one person could be considered a mortality, but the death of all people in a region or period of time can also be referred to as their mortality.

  20. The diseases and health conditions targeted by global health initiatives are sometimes grouped under "diseases of poverty" • Respiratory infections • Diarrheal diseases • Maternal health • HIV/AIDS • Malaria • Nutrition • Violence against women • Chronic disease

  21. Definition of global nurse • A global nurse is culturally sensitive, collaborative, and knows that conditions like heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and infections have no borders. A global nurse understands that technology has created a smaller world, with people in instant contact and eager to share information. A global nurse knows that what happens in one part of the world affects the others, including the U.S.

  22. Nurses’ Role in Access to Global Health • Many nurses are now participating in global health at the international level. They are involved in organizations that promote and provide access to healthcare in developing countries. • They are participating in relief efforts in countries impacted by natural disasters. • Nurses are advocating for policies that eliminate health disparities related to poverty, illiteracy, and gender discrimination

  23. CONT… • They are providing consultation in other countries to help nurses improve their status and to expand their roles through further education.  To be effective in these global efforts, nurses must learn about the specific healthcare needs and healthcare systems of the involved countries as well as learning about the culture of the people.

  24. International Nursing Organization The goal of international nursing organizations is to promote global health and to advance the nursing profession through education and the unification of nurses globally. There are three main categories of international nursing organizations: professional, governmental, and non-profit or faith based.

  25. Example of organization • The Global Nursing Caucus advances the role of nurses in global health. We engage and connect nurses worldwide to create a network for sharing innovative approaches to global health issues. Mobilizing partnerships and resources to facilitate nurses’ contributions, creating an information resource center, and promoting policies that strengthen the role of nurses in global health, GNC is a dynamic advocate for the essential contribution of nursing in improving the health of populations worldwide.

  26. Cont.….. • The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Nursing (CON) is a world leader in the promotion of interdisciplinary global health through education, practice, research, and collaboration
